Q: Treating IBS with proper diet
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 22nd, 2008
Are there any natural/dietary recommendations that could provide a solution to my medical condition? Does a painful abdomen combined with multiple middle of the night bowel movements provide any significant clues as to what may be a diagnosis?

Abdominal Pain Answer A5158
Current medical status: I have had constant stomach pain for the past couple of weeks. This discomfort results in several trips to the bathroom, 4/5 per evening resulting in bowel movements. I have had several years of excessive gas/bowel movements and have about 3/4 per day. I have read a bit about IBS but it sounds hard to diagnose but may be a possibility. The past two weeks have been very trying as I have lost a few pounds as a result and have not slept uninterrupted in quite some time. I have tried antacids without any favorable result. If this pain doesn't subside within the next few days I will seek medical treatment though I appreciate any guidance/insight you can provide.
Current medical treatment: Antacids on a regular basis and hoping that perhaps what I have is a result of a stomach flu that will eventually go away without medical treatment.

There are several tests to be done before confirming irritable bowel syndrome. Meanwhile, you can try to ease your symptoms by increasing your intake of soluble fiber, eating frequent meals of small amounts of food, avoiding food rich in insoluble fiber and avoiding fatty products, milk, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, carbonated beverages.
