Q: Treating head and neck pain with natural therapy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 16th, 2009
I have vestibular ocular relflex, vestibular neuralgia, extreme and constant headaches but mostly profound and extreme pain radiating from the base of my neck to 3" lower inflames base of skull, shoulder blade, shoulder, front of neck, down my arm and into my face. My muscle tense so much they feel like bone.
CT results: Spondylitis C3 thru T1. Severe C3-C4, C4-C5, C5-C6, TIPS & C6-C7 degenerative disk disease & hypertropic facet disease w/bilateral C5-C6 foraminal compromise. There is a sclerotic lesion within the T1 vetebral body which is of uncertain etiology.
This CT was done on 1/8/2009, the report recommended a follow-up bone scan to determine origin of lesion on thorasic vertebrae. There was no follow up. I am seeing a pain management doctor next week, which is why I have the CT scan, I was never told what this means or any thing about a lesion. Can someone please help?

Have you ever been in a car accident or had some trauma to your neck/head? Also, what does "TIPS" stand for?

The CT scan to identify the lesion is a good precautionary measure. It may be benign like a "bone island", but it is necessary to rule out any malignant etiology. You describe significant degenerative joint disease in your cervical and thoracic spine. An MRI may show disc disease as well.

I can assume that you also have a straightened cervical curve from your description, which may contribute to the pain and origin of the arthritis.

There are several natural therapies you may consider. The first is a good fish oil/omega 3 supplement to help with pain and inflammation. The second would be another anti-inflammatory supplement like a quality anti-oxidant (OPC) or herb like Boswellia. You may consider a neck strengthening exercise which can also help to restore your cervical curve. Here is a video describing such an exercise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zhRTOPQ9WY

You may also consider seeing a chiropractic doctor for restoration of your curve and spinal motion, or even spinal decompression therapy. You may also be suggested cortisone injections, facet injections, pain medications, muscle relaxers, etc. Good luck.
