Q: Treating disc herniations with the McKenzie method
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 21st, 2009
The most important question I have is whether or not my pain can be associated with the type and location injury. My PCM has made me feel as though my back is perfectly fine, and that my pain is somehow in my head.

Is there any recommended course of treatment that could offer more permanent relief to someone with my type of injuries? Some doctors have simply refused to treat me, while my primary care doctor seems to think that the injuries listed on the MRI report are not significant enough to cause me the amount of pain I am in.

My physical therapist said that the location, and severity of the injuries explains all my radiating pain, and may even explain the muscle spasms.

Your question involves whether or not your pain is related to the injury that you had and what was present on your MRI results.

Many experts agree that an MRI along with other visual diagnostic tests may not provide a complete picture of what is going on in back pain sufferers. Various reports have shown neurological involvement even though there appears to be no pressure on a nerve by any spinal structures.

A treatment approach you may look into for disc herniations is the Mckenzie method, created by a famous physical therapist named Robin Mckenzie. On his website, you can find a physical therapist that has been trained in this method.
