Constipation is a condition in which the person experiences hard feces. These hard feces are formed usually due to increased absorption of water in the large intestine that leaves the feces dry and harder. This might lead to pain when defecating which additionally induces avoiding defecation behavior in the patient.

If the passage of the fecal material through the colon is speeded up, then the absorption would not be that big and the feces would be less hard. Increasing the volume of the feces by increasing the intake of dietary soluble fibers (which are not digested in the bowels) might be helpful. There are also many different foods that might help you with constipation. You might want to visit your family doctor and talk about the list of food that he considers most beneficial for your condition without causing other complications.

Taking laxatives too often might change the defecating reflex, by changing the tonus of the anal muscles needed to expel the feces. Therefore, taking laxatives for a longer period to treat constipation should be done under control of a health care medical professional.
