Bartholyn’s cyst forms when the canal of a Bartholyn’s gland is blocked. What might cause the blockage is not completely clear yet. When the canal is blocked, bacteria tend to multiply in it, thus causing a cyst or abscess. The only way to solve Bartholyn’s cyst is to open the duct and to remove the pus. This is done by surgical incision of the cyst.
The Bartholyn’s cyst is well known for its recurrence. When the cyst reappears again, the same surgical procedure (incision and drainage) is needed). In repetitive cases, marsupialization might be recommended in order to prevent further forming of the cyst or abscess or at least to reduce the frequency. Marsupialization is a surgical method in which a gland duct is left open for continuous drainage thus preventing blockage. However, this might not always be effective.
You might want to visit a surgeon to perform an incision or to consult whether marsupialization might have a greater benefit then incision.
