Q: Treating an undiagnosed skin infection
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 14th, 2009
What is it? It looks like it is so full that it will pop by itself. Could it be a vein that has come to the surface if his skin? What do I do about it. We are keeping it clean and covered w/ a bandaid... with things like MRSA so prevalent, we want to protect the area.

Current medical status: Regarding my 10 year old son, he developed a pimple on his arm. It appeared to be filled w/ blood. While drying him out of the shower one night, it popped. It was bubbling blood for over an hour before it stopped.

It is hard to tell what the bump is, but an assumption can be made. Given the data you provided, your son might be experiencing a skin infection. You might want to visit your family doctor for a swab from the wound and antibiogram that will determine the exact bacteria that caused the bump and the adequate antibiotic to treat it.

Meanwhile, keeping the wound clean and covered and putting an antiseptic on it is recommended.
