Q: Transverse abdominal pregnancy ?

If a woman is having an abdominal pregnancy and the baby is NOT in the uterus and is lying transverse (across instead of up and down), would an oblique ultrasound most likely be needed to see the fetus? Or would a regular non-oblique ultrasound see the fetus as well? Also...if the baby is higher up, near the ribs...would a pelvic ultrasound possibly miss seeing the fetus?

hello,
not entirely sure about the abdominal pregnacy.
I do how however know a few things about ultra sounds.
I am confident that both will see baby but not sure if
either one could see things to measure baby. Usually they like to measure the amunotic fluid, see how well
blood is following in baby, the heart beat in baby.
The position of baby usually does not have any baring on
seeing baby other than it wiggling around and "hidding" on the tech. Is it possible to have a baby with it not being in the uterus? Where is the placenta?
let me know what happens.

Yes, it is possible. It's called an abdominal pregnancy (or extrauterine). Normal pregnancies are called intrauterine--INSIDE the uterus. The placenta can attach to a number of things outside the uterus...tho this is rare. ONLY REASON I know this, is cuz I've done a LOT of research trying to figure out these strange pregnancy-like symptoms I'm having. As long as the fetus receives nutrients from the placenta, it can grown inside the abdomin. But there can be complications, and the farther along the fetus matures, the more risky it is to deliver--due to possible hemmorhaging. I'm trying not to get nervous...but I am DEFINITELY concerned about what's going on inside of me. Especially since the doctors can't tell me what it is...and I've gained 12 lbs in less than 2 months! (NOT NORMAL IN THE LEAST for me!!!)

can I ask where you are from? Do you have access to a dalopper or a stethiscope? If you do try and find another heart beat your heart beat will be 100 or less where as baby inside is anywhere from 129 lower side to 160 can be higher but not usually. Also feel your tummy and push different places and see if you et a response to your pushing on it like a kick or punch. but you have to look closely and after you push keep your hans there lightly. Oh one other thing is if you happen to get a bump and it bleeds see how thick it is or not. as a pregnant woman your blood is thiner that normal due to baby. Have the doctor's done anything? let me guess they tell you it is all in your head and there is no way that this is what is happening to you. Right?
Do you have any community suuport like a public health nurse. If you do ask them to take a listen. Also your abdomine is it getting round? can you feel the back of baby through your skin? Oh you could go to a pregnancy crisis center. Even if you are not in crisis they will help you. They may even be able to advocate for you at the doctor's or hospital!!!
Please contact me pm I will go talk to my public health person and see other than an ultrasound will show baby.
How far along are you 3 4 months if you are less than that the heart beat thing will not work as babies heat beat can not be heard until the 12th week or so.

You know...I believe my husband has a stethoscope here at the house. Not sure why I didn't think of that before. DUH. Razz

If I am pregnant...I'd be approx 38 weeks. I've felt things that FEEL like fetal movements, but I'm not sure if they are. However, the normal pushing on belly and getting a response isn't there like it was with both my girls. But I've read that if it's an abdominal pregnancy (extrauterine) that the baby doesn't move as much, and has been overlooked as something else.

I'm tellin' ya. This is the strangest thing I've ever experienced.

And yes...doctor pretty much has said this is all in my head. HELLO...it's NOT! I had the symptoms FIRST and then started putting things together...not the other way around. *sigh*

I'm VERY TIRED tonight. And I'm not so sure that taking Motrin is a great idea...especially since they don't know what's going on with me...and my bleeding this month only lasted 2.5 days...not the norm 4-6.

okay if you are in deed pregnant and you bleed now could be not a good sign also in a 1 hour period the baby should move 10 times that you can feel. maybe baby is just tired try having an icy cold drink if water and then lay on your left side and watch or feel for movement. If you do not feel the baby move at least 10 times go to the hospital you are considered full term.
37weeks is full term. Motrin is okay but you should try just tylenol and only a small dose. You say you are tired. Are you or do you feel like you are getting the flu? If you are it is time go to the hospital to have the baby. That is a sign it is time and if baby is not in the uterus then you are going to have tp have a c-section. If I were you I would go in NOW do not wait.
take a messureing tape and kind feel your tummy for the toes and the head and meassure. You sound to me like you are in the transition part of labour and once you get past it comes active labour and I will tell you right now that could be very dangerous for you. If you can hear the heart beat with the stethescope then take it with you!!! You know you could try calling a midwife and telling her what is happening you do not want to wait anymore as baby will need to come soo rather thean later. When did you hve the ultra sound? You had better just go into the refuse to leave saying that until they find out what is wrong. If they do not believe tell them
you are in a geat deal of pain and that you have gained
lots weight that is unexplainible. You must get to the hospitsl as you are not going to be able to deliver tha baby naturally.
let me know I will be praying for you. By the way if you can not feel baby move after the cold water go straight to the ER baby is in trouble and so ae you!!!
regards,
taykare
