Q: Transmission of HPV and vaginal yeast infections
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 24th, 2009
Hello, I'm an 17 year old girl. For about a month or so I've had a vaginal yeast infection that doesn't really go away. I called my GP and she told me to use a normal antifungal cream. I've been using it for a couple of days and I feel better. However, I'd like to ask a question: Is it possible for Candida to be transmitted to other parts of the body such as the eyes or mouth? I wash my hands every time I put the antifungal cream on and everything but is it possible to have some candida under your fingernails or something and then rub your eye and therefore get candida into your eye? Thanks in advanced for answering my question.

Vaginal yeast infection can be easily transmitted on other mucosa if adequate hygiene precautions are not taken. Simple hygiene (washing hands with soap and lukewarm water) is enough to prevent infection.

HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease that needs direct contact between the mucosa in order to transmit it to another person. So, transmission of HPV in both oral intercourse and fingering is possible.

The American Cancer Society recommends having your first Pap smear three years after becoming sexually active, or by age 21, whichever comes first.
