Q: My Dad Has HIV

My dad has HIV
he had gastric bypass surgery
and got tainted blood
i'm 15
i dont know how to feel about this
and yeah i took the classes for high school
but i mean u really dont think about it till it happens to u or someone u love
Hes on meds to keep it in control
hes had it for about a year
i just wanna know if theres anything i can do to help?
How long dose he have?
do i need to worry right now?
if u have any advice at all about HIV please tell me
i wanna know everything i can

You dad may have a long time left. HIV is no longer an immediate death sentence. Many medications can be used to control it and many people with HIV live longer than expected. That's not to say it isn't a serious disease because of course it is.

You can help by simply being who you always have been. Don't treat him like a fragile, breakable thing. He's the same person he was before. HIV doesn't change a person.

HIV won't necessarily develop into full AIDS for many years.
