Complications that are serious are rare. The most serious problems are infection (<1% risk) and bleeding within the layers of the eyeball (<0.1% risk). Either of these unlikely problems have reduced in frequency with modern 'phaco' techniques. It is therefore very rare to develop loss of vision as a result of cataract surgery now.
It is not uncommon to get blurred vision for a few days but it can be vastly improved on day 1 after surgery. Near vision may be very fuzzy, depending on lens implant, until a prescription for glasses is organised. Side effects that are common include minimal dry or gritty eye feeling for a few days. Sometimes the capsule (thin tissue lining) surrounding the lens implant can go hazy - this can be easily dealt with by laser - most people dont need this nowadays.
I should add that risks of surgery do depend on any pre-existing eye condition. Some conditions make surgery more complex, and potentially more risky.
