Q: Crohn's And Period

I was diagnosed with Crohn's in November of 2006. I was ok until February. My condition only worsens when it is around time for my period. I have alwys had bad cramps with my period, but now it combines with my Crohn's. I went to the emergency room my past two cycles because I get in so much pain I start to convulsing and black out from pain. I loose feeling in my arms and legs and have diareea with no indication at all. My gastro pretty much told me that it's something I have to deal with. My Gyno tried to put me on birth control pills, but I had a bad reaction to them. Does anybody have any suggestions or have this problem themselves?

Crohn's Disease And Period
I wish I had an answer for you! I have crohn's and have something like a flare up every month with my period. Nothing as bad as you are describing but bad enough for doc to often consider prednisolone to get me through. I have told Gastro. that I think it is connected time and time again and nobody will listen to me. Only time I have had any relief was while I was pregnant and then while I had IUD and periods stopped.
Good luck. I really hope you find an answer!

May I ask how you were diagnosed with Chron's??? I'm not sure what I have, but I show some symptoms for it. I have a really noisy bowel, pain in certain sections of my large intestine and before my bowel movements I feel extreme pain (I rate it a 9 out of 10) as if my bowel is streching or exploding. ALSO, I have rectal bleeding every single time I go. Sometimes when I put my hand on my tummy I feel something moving or spasms which is very scary. I sometimes wonder if it it a huge tape worm. My wait for the GI specailist is 11 months almost a year. That is completely unbelievable. I don't know how to cope with this. My doctor doesn't seem to take this seriously and I don't know how to get anybody's attention that this is really bothering me... Sad

Periods
i too have worse times once a month and unfortunately have also been told to deal with it.all i do is make sure i have some good pain killers on hand.i have a great doctor who at least believes there is the posssibility crohnes can be made worse by your period.an iud sounds like it could help(no period)but it depends what meds you are on.they don't like to use them when on immune suppressants.sorry i can't help.sometimes it's just nice to know you're not crazy and the pain is REAL.

Periods
same thing, here. My crohn's always seems to flare up right before I start. I asked my dr about it too, and he said there isn't a link. he said it might be a hormone thing. I think it's about time they look into it.

I have chron's and it makes my cycle a pain in the... well, you know lol. I have a question of my own... I was told that people with chron's can't take birth control pills because it risks damaging the stomach lining further... Is this true??

protest Ok, I know how you all feel I've been dealing with crohn's for 8 yr's and in the last year my period has become a source for my crohn's to act up. I'm 44 yrs old ,doc's say I'm young, lol tell my body that I'm in so much pain. I get the same symptoms as if its a crohn's flareup. Seen all the Doc's as always, did the tests they wanted me to do, tried the meds had a depo shot. It all failed to help with the symptoms. "Now this is my idea and if it fails I'll tell you all." I'm going to have a hysterectomy, I'll leave one ovary so I wont have to take hormone pills. I had to demand it mind you, there is only so much a person can put up with and I've reached the end of mine. This isn't a cure but I'm hoping it settles the flareups down.

I have crohn's disease and I would have extreemly painful periods and it would flare my crohns up. Mt GP also put me on the combinded Pill which made things even worse. I have however since found out from the NACC that the combinded Pill execerbates Crohn's and that I should be on the mini pill. Since going on the mini pill it prevents me having periods at all and therefore I never get a flare up of crohn's. I have had 3 lots of surgery and they have removed 6feet of my bowel so yes I can understand how painful the cramps can be.

Hope you get better Soon

Emma

Re: Crohn's Disease And Period
I totally agree. My pregnancy was the longest I had ever gone without major flareups and I wasn't able to take any of my meds because predisone was detrimental to the baby. The thing with Crohn's is, it reacts to hormonal changes in your body so for women your cycle or a pregnancy could be pure torture in terms of pain and flare ups.

There are sooooooooo many different birth control pills out there that you could choose. I think to find the right one for you your gyn, gastro and regular doctor have to exchange information about your health to find which prescription that is.

This is sort of related to my Crohn's flare-up after a hysterectomy. I am totally convinced that some sort of hormonal imbalance (whether it is from a monthly period or menopause) is setting off all of our Crohn's. I am planning on seeing an endocrinologist in the hopes of getting some answers. I will keep you all up to date. Think about it. We've all been to so many doctors, what's one more if it helps provide an answer and some relief for all of us. Have a great day!

There is a little research out there about periods and Crohns...mine is nasty a week before and the first 3 days of my period...apparently the pill will work to calm this down if you can find one that you can tolerate.
