asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 8th, 2007
hi.. i had frequent urge to urinate and a bit of abdominal pain. so had some blood tests done a month ago. my wbc count seems to be going down, was 1.8 a month ago and now 1.3. i feel completley fine now and the urge to urinate and abdominal pain are not so bad anymore.. so why would my wbc be low and going down. i had a hiv test after the first wbc test and i was negative. im an africa american, dunno if it makes a difference. thanks

Causes of low white blood cells (leukopenia) include: infections (both viral and HIV), autoimune disorders (lupus), certain medications, radiation therapy or bone marrow disease. You've experienced infection of the urinary tract. During most infections (especially the bacterial ones), the white blood cell count goes up. After the infection is overcome, it comes to its normal levels. If the white blood cell levels continues to fall down you may need to take into consideration the aforementioned possibilities and request diagnostic examinations from your general practitioner.
