Q: Is This Acid Reflux??

I recently, in the past week, have had the feeling at the back of my throat, as though I could get sick, or maybe that I need to belch-- even when I've just woke up, and i don't feel physically ill otherwise. I've had heartburn before, occasionally since i was like 25 or so. (I'm now 32.) Is this maybe what I'm experiencing-- and if so, is it as simple as using some tums or whatever?

Hi
Acid reflux, you would belch or have this acidy taste come back up into your mouth. Its when your esophogus is damaged or lining of stomach is weak, or....the part that suppose to close off the acid to stomach doesn't close and it backs back up into your throat. If you take tums or rolaids or any other meds for indestion/heartburn and this feeling stops, I'd say you pretty much have it licked. If however, this conditions continues, go see a gastro specialist. Hope this helped! Cool

Acid Reflux
There are different symptoms for different people. I didn't have any belching up at all. I would wake up at three in the morning and be very nauseous. I'd stand in front of the sink and salivate for twenty minutes, and then it would go away. Tums will not work. You need a prescription for Nexium. If it isn't too severe over the counter Prilosec might help.

You should visit a gastroentomologist. Acid reflux may have serious consequences if left untreated.

Yes, I agree... a quick easy way to "test" this theory is to go buy youself some OTC antacids like Rolaids or Tums and give it a try for a day or two. If this helps, go see your doctor for a more permanent solution (might be GERD caused by H Pylori). If it doesn't help, go see your doctor anyway as it might be something more serious.
