Q: How Often??
asked by: ContraversylovesCompany on July 5th, 2007
New User, Becoming EHEALTHy
i always hear people talking about frequent urination, and i just have some questions.

- how frequently is it? every 15 mins? every hour?
- do you urinate a normal amount or a very very small amount?
- is it usually light (meaning you just drank a lot) or dark?

for me its light yellow and when i go i pee alot more than usual. almost 2 times as much
and it happens atleast once or twice an hour
and four or five times in the middle of the night

when your pregnant your bladder grows 8 times in size
so it fills up with ALOT more urine...and plus...you have to pee for two people now

Well actually you don't pee for 2 people...the baby pees in the womb that is part of what makes up the amniotic flood and cushions the baby. But your right about it growing. I don't pee that often but I pee a lot more then what I used too. Exspecially now that i'm 27 weeks and he uses my bladder for a stress ball. Or so it feels at times. Not only that but a lot of preg women increase their amount of floods when preg. In the book I read it says that is also part of the cause.

Yeah I would say the longest I can ever make it is 2 hours and at night I get up at least twice, and it's been like that throughout most of my pregnancy. btw, i am 32 wks.

and i was wondering, when the baby pees, how does it get clean in there does it like circulate through the placenta? How does that work?

The baby doesn't get clean really. Trust me...not a pretty sight when it's born. I mean it doesn't drink the pee or anything like that. Basically it gets cleaned after it's born. It's just extra cushion for the baby in case you fall or have an accident.

I have never heard of a bladder growing 8 times its size during pregnancy. To my knowlege, a combination of hormones and pressure from the uterus make you urinate more, not bladder growth. How would the uterus be able to grow if it has to contend with a huge bladder?

Furthermore, it's true that babies urinate directly into the amniotic fluid. But they aren't really swimming around in urine all the time. Your body regularly replaces this fluid about every 3 hours - this is why pregnant women must drink lots of water and are easily dehydrated.

heres some info on the uterus growth
but im looking into the bladder growth now

Changes of the Uterus

The uterus is a flat, pear-shaped organ. During pregnancy it becomes rounder as it enlarges and becomes softer and thicker. During the third month of pregnancy, it rises out of the pelvis into the abdominal cavity to allow for growth and expansion as your baby develops

not the bladder

I just did a quick google, and everything suggests that bladder capacity (how much urine it can hold) is lessened in pregnancy - otherwise, frequent urination. That shouldn't be the case if the bladder grows 8 times in size.

I just typed "bladder capacity during pregnancy" into google. Maybe your search will come up with something different.

Yeah, that sounds more correct. The uterus stretches to encompass a newborn baby, fluids, and placenta. The bladder doesn't grow. Wink

No sorry, the uterus grows to accomodate the baby this means there is actually *less* space for the bladder to expand causing the pregnant woman to go pee more often.

And the uterus is not flat.
It is pear shaped - like an upside down pear and about the size of a closed fist (pre pregnancy that is)
