My husband recently had an upper GI. He has experienced dramatic weight loss about 30 pounds, he has a constant horrible stomach ache which keeps him from activities and sleeps most of the time. I just received the findings from the secretary as no one ever called to let him know what they had found. The following is the findings and I don't know if it is anything or something. He is still incredibly ill and we need to figure this out:

Preliminary film shows some spurring at L2-3 and superior aspect of L4 vertebral bodies. Preliminary scout film of the abdomen shows a prominent Reidel's lobe of the liver. There is prominence of the right lobe of the liver probably as a Riedel's configuration.

Is this normal or should we be following this up with the doctor?

Thank you

Tresha;

It sounds like you should definitely follow up as your husband is still having problems. The results you have given me are not very conclusive. A Reidel's lobe is described as : An occasional tongue-shaped process of liver, frequently found protruding over the gallbladder in cases of chronic cholecystitis. Also, Riedel's lobe appears to be a common variant of normal anatomy, its prevalence being dependent on age-related changes in liver size and skeletal shape. This may be an insignificant finding.

In order to help you further, I would like to know more about your husband's symptoms. How long has this been bothering him? Does it worsen during or after meals? Does he have bowel complaints such as constipatioin or diarrhea? Vomiting or nausea? What is his age? I will be able to give you more ideas on the questions to ask his physician based on this information

Please read the "sticky" under Celiac disease for more information. This sounds suspiscious for Celiac. Other possibilities could include some sort of parasitic infection such as giardia. Possible tests to discuss with your doctor include blood tests such as a CBC, CRP, Hg/HCT, IgA, IgG, and a stool test for parasitic infection. Possible imaging studies to consider would be an endoscopy. colonoscopy, and small bowel follow through. Please contact the ordering GI doctor's office and be firm that your husband needs to folow up on his upper gi and further testing. Unfortunately, sometimes you really have to be tenacious. I hope this helps.
