Q: Pain After Appendectomy

I am a 35 year old male who had an emergency appendectomy a week ago this morning. The technique for removal was Laparoscopic. It is 5am and I have been up for the past few hours not able to sleep from the pain and discomfort I am experiencing. I have not been able to do much in the way of bowl movements and every time I do it is extremely painful. Also very little stool is excreted, mainly just bile and gas. The doctor told me that he had to poke and prod quite a bit to remove my appendix. It seems that the pain is caused mainly from gas and not being able to release. However, when I am able to release, the pain is almost intolerable.

From what I have been reading, this does not seem to be normal after an appendectomy. Please help with any suggestions....

It could be normal, as surgery to the bowel system has a way of disrupting the normal rhythm of things down there. It could be due to pain medication, as they tend to make a person constipated. Amazingly enough, the pain from constipation can really be intense. Your body will need 6 weeks of recovery time from the anesthesia and surgery to get back to it's normal self again. However, should you see black, tarry or coffee ground stools, loose watery diarrhea that worsens, increased pain, fever or anything that truly alarms you, please contact your physician right away. It could be a sign that somthing else is going on.

I am right now, today 14 days from Appendix Surgery, and everthing is ok, thank god the doc caught it before it burst.. but I was able to go to the washroom almost 4 days later (once I got off the liquid diet) , the main thing that the doc told me was that I was on T2's for pain, and they would completely constipate you after long periods of use.. so I was also using a stool softner which did the tricK, as for the gas... trust me there is ton, and nothing is more frustrating... but grab a pillow and hold it tight against you stomach.. Also I founf that making two fists, and rubbing the lower part of you back in a circular motion... right above you hips worked awesome for both.... I just lucked on to it....

Good luck..
