My twin sister and I have both experienced hair loss. We both were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 15 years ago. I didn't experience my hair loss untill about 4 years ago when I switched to the insulin pump. Before I was on Lantus and Humalog. Then switched to the pump with just Humalog. Lost a ton of weight (Lantus makes you gain weight, read up on it) Being a woman and knowing my body I could tell right away that my hair was falling out progressivley. Not all at once, just noticing it was getting thinner. I had thick curly hair, although it is fine, I (along with my twin) had a ton of it, and it was long. I thought it was maybe because of my weight loss. My mom and my twin sister thought I was crazy when I told her my hair was thinning because I had so much hair. Then it started happening to my twin. Interesting to have a person with the same disease. I knew I wasn't crazy.
Both of us have lost hair through the past 5 years. Wish I could post a picture of before and after. I am not bald, but having thick hair to thin can really get to a woman, especially since we are only 25.
I went to a dermatologist. BIG waste of time, paid a 40 dollar co-pay to have him tell me to take Rogain or Biotin, or that it may be genetic.
Honestly, it could be hormonal since our body went from 2 meds to one with the pump. I had some serious thought that it could have been the Lantus that made our hair thick since the side affect is weight gain. I have since switched back to Lantus since the hair loss was too much for me.
We both go to the same hair dresser, and my stylist did say my hair was a little bit thicker.
Who knows if it is the Lantus. Bottom line, don't waste your time spending a whole lot of money on asking your doctors what is going on. The truth is like many of these threads say, they don't know. The doctors have not yet linked Diabetes to hair loss. But it's happening more to just one person.
Maybe if we get enought people, we can figure what the heck is going on and if there is anyway we can fix it. It will take too long for doctors to figure it out. Has anyone seen the docamentary on a man that went to the Amazon and tested a woman's (Indian) blood sugar and it was 223. The people who lived in the Amazon gave her something from a plant, later tested her blood and it was normal. Read an older post on here and another man actually went there and the same thing happened. Listen folks there is a cure out there but our goverment is too messed up and the insurance companies make billions of dollars off our disease. Wish there was hope and advice for our hair falling out.
