Possible Side Effects:
1. Allergy to latex
2. Allergy to vaginal spermicidal cream or gel
3. Recurrent bladder infection due to pressure on the urethra from the rim
4. Pelvic pain from improper insertion or fitting
Possible Complications: Toxic Shock Syndrome
sudden high fever
vomiting, diarrhea
dizziness, faintness, weakness
sore throat, aching muscles and joints
rash (like a sunburn)
REMEMBER!
Leave diaphragm in place for 6-8 hours after having sex, but no more than 24 hours.
Never use oil-based products: mineral oil or vegetable oil.
Be careful with some vaginal preparations: estrogen cream, Monistat cream an Vagisil. Check with your pharmacist to determine if the vaginal preparation you are taking is safe with latex.
A diaphragm should be replaced after 1 or 2 years or before if it is damaged or bent.
Diaphragm does not protect against STIs or HIV. Use a condom to reduce your risk.
