Q: Very Sick Baby

Hannah is very sick. I have no clue at this point what the problem is. I took her to see a doc on Sat and they looked in her ears and noted that hear eardrums weren't red, but there was a red ring around them. She has had this massive long squishy (like a sponge, it's really weird) bruise on her head for the last 1 1/2 weeks or so that i thought looked kinda like a fracture, but I seriously doubted that it was, because I figured she would have had symptoms of a head injury, and I can't remember when she would have bumped her head like that. Last week she was fussy, so I thought that maybe she was getting teeth. Then on sat she was lethargic, had a fever of 103, and wouldn't eat or drink anything. I started her on antibiotics on sat evening and figured she would be feeling better by sunday evening. She was absolutely miserable yesterday and cried whenever she was awake. She slept for five hours straught yesterday morning into the afternoon. last night she cried inthe night off and on all night long. This morning her temp was 103 again. I am taking her in to the youth clinic at noon. anybody have a child with a head injury and similar symptoms? My older daughter had a concussion a few weeks ago, but she had no real symptoms, esp. fever and all this other weird stuff. Hope they don't think I am a bad mom and start thinking abusive thoughts on me. I don't know what's going on. I hope they don't have to admit her.

I have no thoughts on the head injury? I would say if the hospital thought she had one they would have done the appropriate testing?

Good luck to her and you. I hope she's feeling better real soon! Poor baby. Its a drag when they are sick.

Poor baby!

So you don't have any clue when she would have hit her head? How scary is that? You think you are watching them so close and then something like that happens and its like "when did they do that?"

At least the ear infection and the virus are treatable, what did they say about the fracture?

The fracture is 4 cm, and nondisplaced, so there is nothing they will do for it. She will have a repeat x-ray in 3 months to ensure that it is healing and not widening.

I think this happened at her babysitter's house. a couple of weeks ago she was going down the stairs backwards just like Kathy has been teaching her to do. There is a little set of 3 stairs from her kitchen to the living room. I guess she took a tumble and whacked her head pretty hard on the corner of the wall. That would be my best guess as to when it happened. Kathy called me when it happened and we watched her that day for any signs of concussion, but there weren't any. She got a lump on her head, and that was what prompted me to take her in because it has been there so long. The doctor quizzed me about the sitter, but I truly feel that she is not negligible, and I vehemently feel that it is not abuse. Plus, Kathy feels just terrible about it. I guess things like this can happen anywhere. I feel so bad for not taking her in sooner, but the outcome would have been the same, anyway. Poor baby! No wonder she has been so fussy. Crying or Very sad

I just got a call from her sitter to let me know she had a pretty good morning, but still isn't eating anything. She's asleep for the afternoon again. I hope she can get some rest. Yesterday was so busy with CT scans and doctors.

Thanks for that. I thik I need it right now. She has been so awfully fussy, and she sleeps five hours at a time throughout the day. I also noticed she just cut two more teeth. Does anyone know how long this will hurt her? The doctor said skull fractures take a lot longer to heal than bones do. I just don't want her to be hurting and me think she's being fussy. I have a friend who is a neurosurgeon and he looked at her films today and told me that she is going to be fine, and he sees no evidnece of brin injury or annything like that. He also said the fracture should heal without any surgery so I am pretty relieved to hear that too. He gave her a prescription for Codeine with Phenergan for pain. Maybe that will help her feel better and be less fussy.

I hope she gets better soon. You will both be in my prayers. Hopefully she begins to eat better soon. I don't think there's a way to tell how long it will hurt her really. It just bepends on how fast she heals. Then again babies do heal faster then most so hopefully not much longer. Her fussiness could not only be due to her head if she is cutting teeth. I know my cousins baby was constantly fussy when he was cutting his. I hope she feels better soon!!

No, on the back of her head and front of her head are the indentations from where a baby's skull sutures together. the fracture appears on the left side of that, but that is actully the right side of her head.

Today is the first day I have not medicated her, and she seems to be quite fine so far, meddling, destroying the house, tearing things off the shelves. I am so glad to have my little .Gozer back. She's really quite industrious. Wink

So very happy to hear Miss Hannah is feeling better. Everyday she will get better and better. She is added to our prayer list and I know God will take care of this little angel and heal her quickly. Let her sleep when she will. This is lifes way of allowing bodies repair it-self when we are asleep. You are a wonderful Mom and kids are clumsy and get bumps bruises and fractures......don't ever doubt yourself cause we will be out here in the wings cheering you on! HUGS! Cool
