Q: Looking For General Information About Hip Condition

My wife has noticed a swollen area over her right hip...Does not hurt even when touched, but feels like a soft spongy mass about 6 inches long and 2 inches wide. Her left hip looks normal. She saw her general practitioner today who did not know what it was and has instructed her to see a bone and joint specialist.

Just trying to get an idea of what condition would create such a mass over her hip. He said that it might be bursitis but from what I am reading is not the case.

Thanks

Thats a Tough One
It could be a bunch of things. Bursitis is a possiblity but you usually don't see a mass at the hip joint. It could be a lipoma which is a harmless fatty tumor.

Has anyone considered that you may have a fatty lipoma - benign fat mass under the skin - non-painful, feels and can look spongy. They can be quite large. You could go to a dermatologist.
