Q: Severe breast pain, facial hair, and larger nipples ... norm
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 1st, 2007
I had a hysterectomy several years ago. I am 41 y/o. Over the last year I started having severe breast pain, swelling, and even my nipples are larger. It reminds me of when I was breast feeding or pregnant. I had my yearly pap test and exam last August. My doctor just said my body still thinks I am having a period since I still have my ovaries. I always had horrible period with breast tenderness but nothing like this in my entire life. They hurt so bad that even my clothing hurts them. I don't mind having the larger breasts but it seemd like the pain is lasting longer than just a few days now. It has been almost two weeks and I am frustrated. I have noticed that each time I shower daily I have a handful of hair in the drain. I never had that before. I also have hair growth on my face as well as acne. I feel like I am going through puberty! What is my problem?

Hysterectomy Answer A3093
As long as you have functional ovaries you will experience the same menstrual symptoms as before the hysterectomy except for the actual menstruation. The symptoms you mentioned (hair growth, hair loss and acne) could be due to excessive male hormones in the body. You can consult with an endocrinologist about the condition and seek treatment if necessary.
