Q: Deterioration After Cervical Fusion

Hi, I have had a cervical fusion at c5-7 for 7 years. I now have severe symptoms that appear to be caused by the level above C4. I saw my neurosurgeon and of course they want to do a cat scan to rule out any problems with the existing fusion but he is talking about another fusion at the new level. I am wondering if anyone else has been in the situation of facing a second fusion and am I simply setting myself up for facing a third surgery x number of years from now on the next level above that?!

Also, has anyone used nerve ablation to deal with the symptoms and how long did it last?

Thanks, Felice

felice....sorry for your new problems after your previous fusion. I was not a candidate for fusion in my lower back but I have had radiofrequency nerve ablation.

Of course, my ablation was lumbar in the facet joints while yours would be cervical but, alas, mine only lasted about two months. Everyone is different surely and it might benefit you more than it did me.

I did have cervical surgery many years ago to remove a bullet near my spine and, luckily (fingers crossed) I have not had any upper spinal problems since.

Find out all you can about the new situation and inquire whether subsequent fusions are in the offing and just how stable they are. My neurosurgeon told me after a discogram that too many of my discs were involved and that my fusion wouldn't last leading to another fusion every two or three years. He advised me to forget surgery. Crying or Very sad

At any rate, I wish you luck in your quest to alleviate your pain.
