Iud? Help/advice
Posted: 06-29-07 10:09am

I want to do some Research on the IUD. I am only 18 and know that with Mirena you cannot use it unless you have had a child. But was wondering about paragaurd. I am in a serious monogamous relationship, have been tested for sti's (have none), I know the concerns of pelvic inflammatory disease or risk of infection. I very much like the idea of a 12 year birth control. See I might not want children at all and this seems like a better alternative than getting my tubes tied and regretting it later . I have experimented with hormonal birth control and just do not like the way my body reacts to it. I have had bad experiences with pills. I am currently on the shot, and like it and have had a good experience in general but do not like the weight gain I have had while on it. And I also like the idea of non-hormonal birth control that does not involve insertion or putting something on right before sex, just checking monthly that it is correctly in place. Just wondering if anyone has ever had an experience of getting an IUD inserted at my age, I would like to do some research on it before talking to my doctor. I also have fibromyalgia and was wondering if an IUD might effect it?

Hello I am glad that I found your post since we had the same experience. I am currently 19 years old but I was 18 when I had an IUD (paragard) inserted. I had it for a year and I love it! I had no problems with it and I had no side effects. I am nulliparous (never had kids and never been pregnant) and I had an IUD inserted successfully and like what I've said before it is the best birth control for me. I'm glad that you are interested about this bc. May I ask where do you live. I live in San Diego CA and I had an IUD inserted w/o problems in my local planned parenthood clinic. You see, as a young and nulliparous woman, it might be hard for you to find a doctor that will be willing to insert an IUD. Because some doctors are not comfortable inserting it to young adults who never had children. But still, if you are persistent you will find a doctor who will. If you need more information about this, you can go to http://www.maqweb.org /iudtoolkit/faq.shtml . This website is very informative about this BC option and it has all the new updated information about copper IUD's. If you have more questions, you can go ahead and send a private message. I will reply as soon as I can. Good luck;-)

I have only read on the medical websites about the insertion of the IUD. Is it really uncomfortable? or is it painful? Or do you know what the majority of women's responses is about this question?

The insertion feels like bad menstrual cramps. For me, it was really uncomfortable and slightly painful but the good thing about it is the procedure or the actual insertion only last for a couple of seconds. After my insertion, I only felt minor cramps for a few hours and then the next morning, I felt perfectly normal and ready to go. I have been reading several experiences with IUD and most of the people felt pain during insertion but most of them felt it was a breeze to (it really depends from woman to moman). My advice for you is to take 800 mg of Ibruprofen an hour before insertion because this will help with the pains.
