Q: Massive Blood Clots

my father recently passed away due to massive blood clots going from his legs to his lungs. This happened the night he had his appendix removed. We found out his lungs were filled with the blood clots and they weren't caused by the surgery only released due to the surgery. My question is since there were so many clots wouldn't he have had discomfort or swelling in the legs, or any kind of symptom previously since they said the clots started forming weeks or months before? He had no pain or discomfort or swelling, with that many clots is that normal?
