Q: Vaginal pain + swelling and spotting : Bartholin's gland ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 25th, 2007
I had my period on June 5 and it was normal, kinda light and lasted about 4 days. Two weeks later on the 19th I started bleeding again, the next day was heavy so I went to ER and they seem to think it's hormonal. Yesterday I woke up with pain in the vaginal area and it was swollen. It's more painful today and still swollen and it hurts to sit, and sometimes even walk. I have a slight fever of 99.8 and have flu-like symptoms. When should I seek medical attention. Could I just have the flu on top of this other condition? Is it my Bartholin's gland and will it go away on it's own? How long should I wait before seeking medical advice, as I do not have insurance and am unemployed so I don't have much money.

We can not determine if irregular vaginal bleeding (metrorrhagia) is functional (hormonal) or organic without a gynecological examination first . Organic reasons for spotting (including a tumor or infection) must be excluded first before we diagnose spotting as a functional manifestation. Infection of the Bartolini’s gland is painful and can cause fever but doesn’t cause spotting. You can visit your gynecologist for a proper examination and to seek a correct diagnosis.
