I had a bladder infection and was prescribed (I'm just reading what is on the bottle) sulfameth/trimethoprim generic for Bactrim DS Tablets. My infection was 95 % gone by the time I got to the doctor which was Tuesday 6/19/2007. I was supposed to take 2 a day just to be safe. I took 1 on Tuesday and two on Wednesday. I mention I was on Nuva Ring while I was at my doctor's and they didn't mention if the antibiotics would react with it. I forgot that I had taken 3 total early in the week. I had unprotected sex last night Saturday 6/23 and this morning Sunday 6/24. Is there a chance that these have interacted and cancelled out the protection from my Nuva Ring? I really am uncomfortable with the thought of taking emergency contraception, and my boyfriend feels the same way about it. I have only used birth control for 4-5 months and was unsure if the anti-biotics rule pertained to nuvaring. Does anyone know about this specific antibiotic? If there is a possibility, how soon can I get a blood test at my gynecologist's office to figure out if I need to remove my nuvaring?

Emergency contraception is not something you should be nervous about. Just so you know, it does not abort babies!!! It does the exact same thing your nuvaring does, just in a higher dose: it prevents ovulation. That's it.

Secondly, some antibiotics interfere and some don't. Only a doctor can really tell you if they do or not... So I'd call him/her back asap.

Update
**UPDATE** I had to go to my physician today for a phsyical anyways, so I asked him and he did not think that was anything for me to worry about with the type of antibiotics I was on. The nurse seemed concerned when I first asked her because she said she has two boys now because of taking antibiotics while on birth control. In the end, I just called my gyno and they told me that I should be fine...I'm still concerned, but relieved I do not have to take emergency contraception...
