I think breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and i think its sad that people get offended by it ....its the best start for our children and i breastfeed my child till she was almost two...i didnt care if i was in public if my child was hungry i fed her covered up of course to protect the sanity of those who have a problem with it .

the issue has nothing to do with discretion because, the last thing breastfeeding women want is someone leering at their breasts, they just want to feed their babies. But to some people it is viewed as unacceptable and even pornographic. Some people can't distinguish between the normal nurturing at the breast and all of the other imagery we have of breasts that is very exploitive.

Fortunately in Canada, women are now allowed a year off work, allowing them to breastfeed for a year But let's face it – new mothers do leave home occasionally and have their babies with them. And yes, their babies do get hungry. I would rather have a woman breastfeeding at another restaurant table than hear her child screaming through the meal. Wouldn't you?

right now, INFACT is acting on behalf of a Toronto woman who has been told not to breastfeed at her fitness club. the Ontario Human Rights Commission has ordered the club to make restitution. How ironic that while men and women parade around the change rooms nude (and a lot of it is not pretty), and people exercise in some pretty scant outfits, a woman would not be allowed to breastfeed in a fitness club.

The real problem is that female breasts are so sexualized, and that people are so used to seeing them selling cars, porn, whatever, that their real use is forgotten. Maybe we should stock up on copies of National Geographic so that our children can get a look at cultures that don't freak out when a female breast is exposed. People who complain about breastfeeding women in public need a reality check on what the containers are for. They're not just there to excite men – they actually have a use.

"The real boobs are the ones complaining about them."

See, I thought we were discussing breastfeeding in public, as in... a mile or more from your house. If you have your house available, well duh!! But to my knowledge, we were discussing mothers seen at the beach, or in the mall, or at a bus station, etc.

On to bebe au lait... aka hooter hiders!! Those are so cute Smile

azure in this case a family room is not a living room

they are also sometimes called mother's rooms (thats what ive seen at babies r us)

eiri, the only place ive seen them (other then babies r us) is one mall in south eastern wisconsin (around the milwaukee area) its a nice little room near the restroom yes but not part of it, they are across the hall from the restrooms and actualy quite decent there are no toilets in these

this is why i said i wish there were more, not for the confort of other peoples prejudice tword breasts but for the confort of the mother, i found (when i was still breastfeeding, its not going so well now Sad were having problems) it was much harder to find a good position and keep it while stnading up and walking around, its much easier when sitting or laying

i've noticed how alot of people have been saying that discretion should be taken into account and i totally agree.. i just so happened to stumble accross this today and though i'd share it with you all

That is such an awesome invention... thank you so much for sharing that with everyone. and it even has an opening at the top so you kan look down at the baby and the baby can breathe; and on the top of that tehy are fashionable.

ANy choice that inconveniences Them: Perfect!
Any choice that inconveniences "Me": Boo!

By "me" I mean people who can't be bothered to look away. "They" are of course the mothers.

I'm with the last two posters.

I just don't understand how it is a mighty inconvenience to just look away?

I think it's because you can't look away, you're drawn to it, you're obsessed with the horror of it, for whatever reason, and no one can admit it. It's like "smell this, it smells horrible!" and you can't stop yourself, you have to smell it. Laughing

I couldn't care less if i see someone breastfeeding at the beach, shops etc. Fair enough you don't exactly want to see someones whole breast hanging out of their top but a baby's gotta be fed! I'm going to breastfeed my little girl (who should be here by now grrr) and i've got a shawl type thing to wear because i'll be going on a ferry to my sister's weddign and the toilets there are grim and i don't really want every to be staring at me you know, plus i have huge boobs so a shawl is kinda essential unless i want to show my whole breast to the world

I think the issue here is that some people are uncomfortable at the sight of a breast. I have no idea why this is so, but it is the truth.

I'm not dissing women who prefer to cover up for their own modesty. I commend you.

But I also just don't understand this dislike of boobs... I guess I never will.

I don't understand it either, to me it's just another part of the body people show more flesh in a bikini on the beach. I've got a book about breastfeeding and it said that when formula was invented (the 50's or 60's can't quite remeber which) many women were discouraged to breastfeed being told that breasts are merely sexual objects and shouldn't be used to feed a child. I think the image of a women feeding her child whether it be by bottle or breast is beautiful and shows a strong bond between them and they shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable while doing it. If the sight of a naked breast is so offensive then why do porn magazines sell so well?

Maybe breasts are only offensive to women who were raised and taught that their bodies were dirty things, that their vagina was something not to touch, and that their breasts were naughty and should always be hidden because only loose, uncouth women showed their breasts, and that they should avoid even touching their own breasts because that may lead to sexual thoughts...

Maybe not to that extreme, but I think every knows the mentality I reference.

And note that it's only the women that feel this way. There's an occasional man, but I'd bet $50 that more women have an issue with public boobs than men do.

Agreed, .Eiri! The United States, especially, has always had a puritanical mindset that has been hard for it to shake.
