Hair sensation in throat
i am also relieved to find that i'm not the only one suffering from this. mine varies from mild to extremely irritating. it feels like hair is constantly stuck at the back of my throat. when i swallow, it seems to go away for a second or two, then returns. my tongue also has these weird bumps in the very back? but i only noticed these sensations after i had my daughter (but it took a good 3-4 years for them to start). i do not suffer from acid reflux, however i was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure due to heredity. doc told me to cut down on the salt, which i noticed someone else on here said they decreased their salt intake and had results. i hope this works. i also smoke. anybody else smoke?? i was seriously thinking it had something to do with that. i'm in the process of quitting to help with my blood pressure. just wondering if the smoking if had anything to do with the weird hair sensation.

Hair stuck in throat feeling
I have the same problem and I smoke. I didn't notice any symptoms, i.e the hair sensation in the back of the throat, until about a week before I got the flu. It has been almost 4 weeks now and the feeling is driving me crazy~! I also eat alot of salt, will try cutting down on that to see if it helps.

You may have an elongated uvula!
This happened to me for about a week or two when I was 11 or 12. I couldn't sleep, I felt like gagging 24 hours a day. I kept getting up throughout the night to spit out the hair that was in my throat, but of course it never came out.

I found out I have an elongated uvula (my grandfather has it too). The tip sometimes sits right at the back of my tongue, or against my throat. It's a disgusting feeling, but knowing that it wasn't a hair helps me ignore it. It still happens occasionally, but I'm able to stay calm because I know it's just my uvula.

Sensation that something is on the back of my tongue
I was SO relieved to find this forum! For over a month now, I have been having these very same symptoms! The sensation of this "hair" or something stuck on my tongue is at the very back and left side of my tongue. I have tried to feel something with my fingers (and gagged) to see if there is a lump or something, tried looking in the mirror to anthing at all and I couldn't. Finally I went to my primary care doctor. He didn't see or feel anything unusual, so referred me to a ENT. My appointment is next month. But by the sounds of these posts, the ENT doctor will not find anything either. For me this started last month and it's driving me crazy. It seems to get better once in awhile, but then it always comes back. I am so relieved to discover others have had this too, so it's not just me. It evidently isn't anything serious...which is what I was concerned about. What is crazy is that it does seem to move around...sometimes the sensation is on the very back of the tongue in the middle, or on the side of the tongue. But most of the time my "hair" sensation is on the very back left side of my tongue. I will be checking back here to see if anyone finds out anything more about this strange condition. It just came on out of the blue...the only thing in my diet that I had done differently before this began was that I had been taking Vitamin D supplements, which I have since stopped.

hair at back of tonge
hi all, i came across this thread whilst looking for something else, ive had the hair feeling on and off for 5years now. all i can say is that it comes on when im stressed!!!.
when im stressed in smoke more and tend to eat more fast foods, for time reasons. (hens higher salt intake) also i tend to have higher blood pressure at these times.
When im less stressed (wouldnt say calm) the feeling tends to go away.
The last time i felt this i had just become a farther (very stressfull) i thought i had cancer!!! but the doc said just cut down on the salt and stress, play more sport and quit smoking, After doing this it went away, i havent had the feeling for 12months now and fingers crossed it wont be coming back.....gl all

Black Hairy Tongue - although it's not always "black"
My six year old son has been fighting this problem for over a year now. It comes and goes, and when it comes, he shuts down and refuses to eat. At it's worse, he went 91 days without eating solid foods and almost needed a feeding tube surgically placed. We've been told a number of things by dozens of doctors, one of which actually told me this was in pyschological problem and a feeding disorder! We found a particular Allergist who diagnosed it as something called Black Hairy Tongue - but said he only knew about that because he did a residency with a dentisit...apparently it's not an allergy, per say. Google it. In my son's case, he does have a number of GI problems and his immune system has been repressed. Unfortunately, I don't really know how to make it go away or understand exactly what triggers it. He is currently having his second outbreak of it, and last time he suffered for over 3 months. Yes, his tongue looks weird towards the back...it actually looks yeast like, but the yeast cultures come back negative - it's bumpy and almost like cottage cheese. We have a special toothpaste, mouthwash and a tongue scrapper to help and we brush & scrape 4-5 times a day. We also have a prescription med with Lidocane and Malox mixed together which helps with the pain and discomfort - he swishes and spits it out before each meal and at bedtime to help him.

Could be swollen tonsils, it's hard to swallow food, don't like spicy food either, if they move around in their sleep to much, it's because it blocks their respiration, and they want to find the right position, they are usually always in a bad mood, can't concentrate in school because can't get enough oxygen at nite, and no rest. Go to a gastro interologist to check the tonsils.

me too
I am also suffering with this at the moment and have recently been through probably the most stressful couple of months of my life because of other things and this hair in throat feeling has come on in the last week. I don't consume much salt or bad foods of late, so not sure if the less salt thing will work in my case, but guess anything is worth a try. Like others on here it is at the back of my throat, but sometimes moves around to other places in my mouth on my tongue. I was wondering about yeast infections, but someone else on here was tested neg for that? I also have a problem where tiny particles of undigested food is coming up into my mouth. So I wonder if reflux is something to do with it, but with that I never have heartburn or acid coming up. Maybe its that silent reflux thing? Good luck to everyone on here with it. It's a horrible sensation to live with.

Thank goodness!! I have been freaking out trying to figure out why I have a feeling that there is hair in my throat that won't go away. I am definitely stressed but don't have acid reflux, per say but sometimes experience indigestion. I am going to try some of the ideas other have replied to help alleviate the problem. I hope it works..thanks

Hair sensation in my throat + some sharp sensation
I also have experienced this sensation intermittently for the past month. But sometimes, it is accompanied by a scratchy irritating sensation - like there is a bone or a pin in the back of my throat. As I said, the hair sensation and the pain comes on quickly and leaves quickly. I plan to see a doctor about it because it's driving me nuts and the pinching pain scares me a bit. Anyone else experience this...?

My eleven year old son also has the feeling of a hair on the tip of his tongue. He does take allegra for allergies but it doesn't seem to help with the hair sensation. He is constantly trying to pull something out of his mouth or spitting. Very annoying for him, myself and his teachers. Not really sure what to do, there doesn't really seem to be a answer for this problem?? Please reply if you have any answers.........

I just got a phantom hair in my throat a couple of days ago. At first I really thought it was a cat hair since I had just been cuddling my cat. Then once it occurred to me that it might not be a real hair, I got a little bit freaked out - I now feel better that nobody has mentioned, like, throat cancer or anything equally scary as a possible cause. I have been eating a probably excessive amount of bread with balsamic vinegar lately - could my palate possibly be irritated by the acid?

I had the same feeling after I had my hair dyed. It went away after a couple of months. That was 5 yrs ago. Now, fast forward today and I have it again! I just had allergy testing done 2 days ago for metals and chemical allergies and this is when it started again. I find out tomorrow what i'm allergic to and I bet this is an allergy reaction:)

I too have a feeling of a hair or piece of food stuck in the back of my throat. I have had acid reflux in the past and I also experience tonsil stones. This came on suddenly and I am going crasy thinking that it is something serious. Glad to hear that it is not. Read that someone was taking vitamin D supplements and noticed "the hair". Did stopping the vitamin D help? I am currently taking it as well and wonder if that may be the cause.

I first had this 13 years ago when expecting my youngest child, it lasted some months and went when she was born. Have had it now for over a month and it is annoying, especially as I reckon I probably look daft going around scraping my tongue with my teeth! Even felt daft doing a google search for the symptom and so happily surprised with this forum. Would probably agree stress and diet might be triggers, last 2 mths have been heavy going. Also taking magnesium citrate as a supplement to counter migraine anything there?

Feels like a hair in the back of my throat
I have had this problem on and off for the past 6 months. I was talking to a friend who indicated they also had it and we both discovered we were taking vitamin D supplements (at the wrong dose). I quit taking the supplements and the problem persists. I am due for a check up and think I will have them check my vitamin D levels (quitting the supplements worked for my friend). Glad to know I am not alone - my dentist examined my mouth with a microscope and could not find anything. I do have some small bumps on the back of my tongue..Will also have these checked out

Hairy Throat symptoms
I started having the same symptom with the sensation of hair in the back of my throat after playing a game with my twin Grand Daughters and their pacifiers. (grabbing the back side of the pacifer with my teeth and playing tug of war with them). The same day, after playing this game, I started having this symptom. So I gargled with a 50/50 solution mix of mouthwash and peroxide. This seemed to take care of the feeling, until I played the game with them again. I watched how they play with their pacifiers and sometimes, they have the back of it in their mouth, instead of the front side). If the pacifiers are not sterile, it may be that I am more sensitive to the bacteria that is getting into my mouth. Once I start to gargle again, all the symptoms go away...but I continue to keep the gargling treatment going for a few days to make sure it passed. At first I'd have to gargle every few hours so it feels less aggravating. This Grandma won't be playing that game anymore...and the pacifiers will be sterilized for the babies. The babies were checked out and they are fine.

Hair sensation with bad taste in mouth.
I also have this ridiculous symptom of feeling there's a hair (or dental floss) trailing down into my throat from the back of my mouth. Additionally, I have a tingly sensation on the left side of my tongue and a horrible metallic taste coming from the left part of my moouth, which happens to be the side of my mouth that has 2 amalgam fillings in the back molars. I'm wondering if there's any corrolation there. Dentist didn't see a hair or floss back there. I'm going to see an ENT, AND have the amalgam fillings removed to see if that helps. It's as if I flossed and a strand of floss broke off, is ancored to a tooth and is trailing down my thoat. Grrrr.
