Upper Back / spine Pain From Weightlifting Accident
Posted: 06-20-07 19:22pm

Hello everyone. Let me give you a bit of background information about myself.

I am 15 years old, and I play football. Every Monday through Thursday after school we have been having weightlifting sessions. This has been going on since December, and it is now June. A couple of weeks ago (13 days to be exact), it was the last week of weightlifting after school (school has since ended, and now we have weightlifting at night). I was doing squats, and I was squatting 295 pounds, so even if that isn't a ridiculous amount of weight compared to others, it is still a significant weight to have on your upper back. Anyway, as I was lifting the bar off the rack, I heard and felt I click in my upper back, but I didn't think much of it. I went on to do my squats and the rest of my exercises.

As I was leaving and getting in my car to go home, all of sudden I noticed an intense pain in my upper back. For the first few days, I could feel it pretty strongly even if I was just standing still. It would feel even more aggravated if I was doing some kind of activity. After that, it started to go away, but very gradually. I figured I just pulled a muscle and that everything would be fine. However, just when I thought things were getting better, the pain came back again. The pain seems to just come and go, but not in any sort of pattern.

I ran my finger along my spine, starting from the top (not including the cervical region, so I guess that would mean I am starting at the thoracic region. All I know is that I started right where my neck meets my upper back and the vertebrae can be easily felt individually.), applying pressure at each vertebra. I felt nothing at the first vertebra, but as soon as I moved to the second, I felt a very sharp pain. If I moved my finger just slightly to left or to the right and apply pressure, I feel nothing. The same thing happens if I move up or down. All the pain is focused right in the one vertebra. If I lean my head forward or backward, I feel it. I also feel pain if I lean my head sharply to the left or to the right, but nothing to intense.

So basically my questions are, what exactly do you think the problem is, is it serious, and do you think it is something that will heal on its own, or do you think it will require surgery?

UPDATE: The pain is starting to come back again, and it's not too bad, but it is very uncomfortable.
