Q: Pap Smears

I have a question...I had sex for the first time on feb.7 and got a pap smear on feb.19. The results are normal, but I was wondering if it was too soon to detect a virus like hpv, for example. Thanks

Hey
You only get hvp through genital warts. I am not sure how long it takes the virus to show up, but I think it might me longer than a few weeks. People can carry the virus for years without having a breakout. Girls are more likely to get any kind of std, before men because our private areas are much more open, and sensitive. If you are nervous about it call the doctor, or make an appointment. If you are positive that the person you are involved with has it, and you had unprotected sex, I would call the doctor anyway. I don't know if there is anything they can do, but it wouldn' t hurt to find out. If you start to notice anything unusual down there, make sure you get it checked out!! Good luck!!!

Thanks for the info...I was wondering if a pap smear could detect hpv as soon as it's contracted ( ie: right after the first time you have sex). Even if no visible symptoms show up, can the pap smear be normal even if I have hpv ( which is unbeknowst to me and the gyno)? Thanks

The pap smear would not be normal if you have hpv.
