Kariva birth control pills + menstruation
Posted: 06-20-07 06:22am

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has had this experience with kariva. I am 32 years old with 2 kids. After each child I was put on kariva. I have never had periods while I have been on this pill. I have been taking this for 5 years now since my last child and no periods. I am currently on the last week in the pill pack, this is when you are supposed to have a period. Well, I am having a period now and think that this is very weird since I have not had any in so long. I have a headache and cramping also. Does anyone know why this would happen?? I had my yearly pap 2 weeks ago and it came back normal, my doctor says it is fine not to have periods while on this pill. I was just wanting to know why all the sudden I am having a period after five years of not having one. thanks

Karifa is an oral contraceptive that contains a combination of synthetic estrogen and progesterone hormones (Ethinyl-estradiol and desogestrel). Karife is used in the same way as most other contraceptive pills. If the pack contains 28 pills, the last 7 pills are inactive and you should get your period while taking them.

It is really strange that you haven’t gotten a period for 5 years. I am not sure that that is normal although is not causing you any problem. Contraceptive pills are made to block ovulation and prevent pregnancy but in a way that will simulate normal cycles with menstruation. You should ask for an expert opinion from a gynecologist and an endocrinologist for clarification on this issue and to pursue any possible diagnostic examinations.
