IS swimming the best exercise to get fit? Are there any just as effective exercises that can be done out of water?

I've heard it is, I've heard it isn't. I do it now just to add an extra option to my daily activities. It's supposed to be easier on your joints. I have really bad knees, and I'm young! The only thing I've noticed is that my neck muscles get very sore from swimming but I doubt I've used them actively for a while so try it! Even if it's not your best get-fit workout it's fun and different than a tredmill

the good thing of swimming is that you are using most of the muscle of your body at once. and it's really good for you joints too

I've heard the same thing about swimming. That is, you're using many of the muscles in your body. Most of the swimmers I see appear to be in pretty good shape!

Swimming is great exercise, particulalry for peopl with joint and back pain, as the water unloads the body weight off the joint and you can reap the benefits of full body cardiovascular workout. However, the one downfall of swimming is that it is not weight bearing exercise. This type of exercise includes walking, weight training and any other exercise which provides impact on the bones. this is one of the best types of exercise to do for Ostoporosis prevention and treatment. In my way of thinking, a work-out routine which is varied and includes many types of exercise is the best bet for obtaining all over results. For example, I run three times a week, do yoga three times a week, and ride bike a couple of times a week. I also try to make cleaning house and playing with my children a "workout".

Most Certainly
I agree, wrestling definitely burns a lot of calories since you are constantly pushing and pulling. Wink

I'm not a competitive swimmer, but I read MMA Fighter's post, it seems logical. Though I think there are power gains, and soft twitch muscle improvements. But on a side note, yes swimming is a great cardiovascular exercise (mind you, cardiovascular, it has little to do with actual muscle strength). It is far less stressing on the joints, running isn't that great for you because of the pressure being hammered onto your knee/ankle joints. Plus it's a lot more multijoint movement then running, you'd be doing pretty much your full body with swimming. With running, well, you got your legs, your butt, and a bit of your core muscles, but thats about as far as it gets.

there is no doubt that swimming is one of the best way to maintain your fitness. but i recent read somewhere that According to a recent study by Danish scientists play a football game with friends is more beneficial to health in general, to burn fat and muscles to develop lighter than a bullfight.

Another advantage is that it was found that those who play football tire less than those that run only: to be doing as an activity that seems more pleasant, enjoy more exercise.

Wrestling usually burns more calories than swimming or running, but really you can burn a lot of calories with any type of cardiovascular activity by increasing the intensity. So I wouldn't say one is better than the other, you just have to take into consideration what you are trying to achieve. As someone mentioned before, it's a good idea to vary your regimen, one to combat monotony, and two to train your body in different ways.
