Ok so as you know i'm from England and from reading on here it seems asthough for those of you in the usa it's routine to get an iv when you go to hospital when you'r ein labour, i'm just wondering why because as far as i know over here it's only done if they need you to have one

As far as I know it is pretty routine. From what I understand, it is to help with keeping you hydrated. It is also there in case they need to give you antibiotics or something pertaining to labor (ie, pitocin, magnesium ect) Correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah i think a lot of hospitals restrict you from drinking or eating when they admit you. so they have to keep you hydrated with an iv. they do that in case they have to do a c-section and they don't want anything in your stomach that can come up. it's also in case they want to give you any kind of meds too i think (like oxytocin/pitocin).

The hospital i'm going to encourages you to eat and drink in the begginning of labour to keep your energy up. Oh man my head hurts from all the differences Laughing

thank god my nurses were practically forcing me to eat while i was in labor. i had jelly donuts, chicken fingers, fries, cheesecake, lots of coke... then i ended up with a c-section and didn't get to eat for 2 days.

I didn't get to eat, either. It was horrible! When I gave birth, my first hospital meal was pitiful. I had just delivered a child and they were giving me very small portions. I asked to have a second meal brought to me and they did.

I've packed a few of my favourate snacks, dried mango, some hard boiled sweets, caramel rice cakes etc plus i've put a few bottles of isotonic drink in there too because my midwife said they advice you to drink it in the early stages to keep your energy up and it's really expensive in the hospital so i figured i'd get some before i went in to be prepared

I ate during my 1st labor, which was kinda good because I ended up throwing up a lot when my contractions were so hard. It wasn't a bad thing though-it was a good outlet for pain. My advice is don't eat anything you don't wanna throw up later. I had a section too and they brought me jello (not vegetarian!) and chicken broth (hello! Chickens don't grow inthe ground!). I was sooo hungry, my family brought me chinese food. with my 2nd child, I got a milkshake onthe way to the hospital, but they took it away from me, which was very sad. I left the hospital on the morning of day # 3 after my second c section and went to eat sushi that night. 10 months of denial is hard ona girl! So I say eat eat eat!

yeah i think it's more for the hospital's benefit than yours when they don't let you eat. midwives allow you to eat and drink if you need to. ugh, when i had surgery i couldn't eat for days afterward. i couldn't even drink water for the first couple of days. i survived on ice chips exclusively. then they start bringing you disgusting hospital food and wondering why you don't even try to eat it. the first time the lady came to pick up my tray i was like "oh...thats food??? i was wondering what that was..." lol. finally someone smuggled in some fettucini from olive garden on like day 4, and that was my first meal.

I refused an .i.v for my labor for my daughter. I labored with no medical intervention.

ALthough, after I had her, I got a fever of 103 and rising...so I *had* to have one to administer antibiotics.

THey told me I had to stop drinking my water in case of an emergency, but said I could chew ice? make sense? Stupid if you ask me...but mreh.

I had her 2 hours after I got there, so I was in so much pain the last thing on my mind was water/ice.

You'll do great!! I can't wait to see herrrr!!

i was lucky, my hospital has awesome food! it's so good that i crave the spicy chicken tenders all the time. nick works there so sometimes i'll meet him there for lunch or he'll steal leftovers if they cater a function. that's even where we get pizza from if we decide we want pizza some night!

I'm so excited! I'm not really all that naervous to be honest, i think it's better not to be too nervous or you'll panic, my sister is amazing and has told me absulutly everything about when both of hers were born so there's not really going to be any surprises because i know what to expect
