Q: Trouble swallowing - anxiety symptom ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 18th, 2007
sometimes i get this feeling like im going to swallow my tongue. i then get panicy and forget how to swallow. this will go on for days, multiple times a day. this morning, after not being able to sleep the entire night, i burped and had acid come up, which hurt my throat and then i couldnt breathe because i couldnt swallow again. i also have been having chest pains. i feel as this is cause by my anxiety because i used to take medicine for for it but stoped taking it more then 6 months ago. what is your feeling on this, is it caused by my anxiety, if not what is causing this and how can i stop it?

The symptoms you describe like “feeling like I’m going to swallow my tongue”, panic, “forgetting how to swallow”, insomnia, “couldn’t breathe” are fairly unusual and are probably caused by anxiety. Chest pain can be due to heart disorder but heart conditions are very unlikely for people your age (late teens). Chest pain is probably caused by anxiety, too. It seems that you can stop these symptoms by taking proper medicines combined with psycho-therapy. The most frequently used medicines for treating anxiety are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). You can consult a psychiatrist or another mental health professional for an expert opinion.
