Q: Pain After Passing Stone

I had (and passed) a kidney stone back in May of 2005. Since then (yes, for the full two years), I have had pain come and go in both kidneys. Sometimes it's so bad, I can't stand and it gets hard to breathe. I have gone to four doctors, and only one didn't come back with "there's nothing we can do". I went in for a CT scan, and nothing was found, however, right now, I am having twinges (the best word I can think of) in my lower back, on both sides. I'm sure it's cause of the kidney stone of yore, but there doesn't seem to be anything there.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, what they did about it. I am drinking lots of water (at least 3 litres per day), and I work in a kitchen for 9 to 12 hours a day, so I am getting lots of exercise. I'm getting really frustrated, since every medical professional seems to think it's all in my head.

I hope someone can help me, as I'm at my wit's end.

Is your pain just in your back or is it in your side too? When I first went to my Dr. with my pain he did an IVP (Intravenous pylogram) it is an x-ray where they inject dye into your vein which shows up on the x-ray film. Then they take another later and see how far it has passed through your kidneys. There are so many tests they can do now. Have you seen a urologist? That's who I was sent to after the test. I hope you get some answers. Good luck.

It's mostly in my back, but partly on my side too. I've gotten blood taken, CT scans, urinalysis, ultrasounds - the whole nine yards. The problem is that when I'm scheduled to go in for these tests, there's no pain (so nothing wrong?). I haven't gone to see a urologist because I live in northern Alberta, and I seriously doubt that there even are any urologists around here. The doctor situation is pretty bad (16 hour wait in the emergency room for some people), and the closest city is a six hour drive away.

Many health food stores sell products to help with urinary and kidney problems. A popular one here in the states is .azo. Along with cranberry juice (if you like it). You are doing the right thing by staying hydrated, that can definitely help with the reoccuring problems. Are you going to the bathroom regularly? Holding urine can also cause reoccuring problems.
