Q: Hip Pain

I have had pain in my illiac crest for over 8 months now. I was told it was a hip pointer or a intrapped nerve. The pain is on the ridge of the curve of my left hip near the belt line and causes a buring and aching pain. It also hurts after I sleep on that side,however, it doesn't hurt to push on the spot where the pain emminates from. It also hurt if I wear atheletic shorts with a tighter waist band. For back ground I was a police officer for 17 years and my taser (stun gun), radio and night stick hung on my belt right on that spot. I was told by the older cops this was called gun slingers hip. I have been to my family doctor and his associates plus I've had a catscan and xray's. If it was a hip pointer wouldn't it have gone away by now? It's not a terrible pain all the time but it feels hot alot of the time and comes and goes? I'm on a anti inflamitorie (Etodolac) which I'm not sure if it is helping all that much. I'm kinda at my wits end. I'm 38 years old and I wish I didn't hurt like this. Is there anything else you think I should be doing.

Well, as I understand the body...most lower back pain (and the Illiac crest borders and connects many muscles of the back and legs to the pelvic floor) comes from a weak abdomen. Perhaps if you try to isometrically strengthen your abdominal muscles you'll experience less pain in the lower spine. Plus, do you have any problems with your right knees or feet? Often, opposite-side joint problems can distort the body out of whack so that, in compensating for the one side, you create imbalance in the other.

I can help with some yoga exercises if you're willing to try!

Well it's really not my back it's my hip area like where a police officer wears his gun but up near the belt line. I have trouble with R /knee and both feet. I think it's from all that weight on my hip, but I'm not sure what to do.

You can start with some simple joint exercises. It sounds like you might benefit from mobility in the ankles, knees and hips.

Lying on your back with both legs in front of you, bring your R knee into your chest. It really helps to do all the movements slowly, so just when you start, begin to notice how you're moving, and then consciously cut your movement time in half. Relax your shoulders to the ground as you gently rotate your ankle in circles...first clockwise then counterclockwise. You can point and flex your foot, and then let it hang to feel the weight of your thigh on your chest. Release and switch sides.

Another exercise can be done standing. Bring the big toe of one foot to the floor in front of you. Try to get the toe to stand alone on the floor, lifting your foot away from the floor. Now, balancing on your standing foot, begin to rotate your heel in a circle. If you're doing this correctly, you'll feel a gentle rotation in the ankles, knees, and hips...and you'll look like Elvis! Try on both sides, and let me know how it goes.
