Q: Menstrual period variations while on birth control - Normal
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 17th, 2007
I have been using the birth control pill loestrin for three months now and this month my period was 4 days late. I was having cramps and kept feeling like my period was going to come, but it didn't come. Then, when I had two more "reminder" pills left, my period came, but it was a dark brown/black color and very light for a day and a half and then it was over. Ususally I get my period two days before the brown "reminder" pills. I have been having un-protected sex with my boyfriend, and I took one pill late this month, so I'm getting worried. What could be wrong?

It seems that there is nothing to be worried about; you got your “period” and can't be pregnant. Taking one pill later during the whole cycle probably won’t decrease the efficiency of contraceptive pills. Menstrual periods you experience while taking contraceptive pills are not always the same as a normal period. Variations are possible... but that should not be considered a problem. You can continue taking the pills as usual.
