Q: HIV Positive & Pregnant : will baby be HIV+ ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 17th, 2007
My wife's brother and his gf of 5 months have hiv. She's pregnant. The family is quite concerned as they aren't sure if the baby will have aids. Can anyone give some info here. The brother heard that there's a 2% chance it will, and his aunt who is a ex nurse said the opposite is true and a high percentage it will have aids.
Beyond all this, he's quite confused. Her parents are an old fashioned (primitive IMO) and are brainwashing him to marry her. The whole idea of someone getting pregnant without marriage is unheard of in their nationality.
He's quite mad and confused. He listens to his family but doesn't care about what they say. Quite aggressive, takes and sells drugs and drinks alcohol..quite agressive short temperment. He went to a psychologist one session and didn't go back. He has a hard time expressing himself. That I blame his parents who is quite cold and not the touchy feely kind. My wife is like that a bit. So no one knows how to "get to him"
Any help appreciated.

HIV can be transmitted from a HIV-positive woman to her child during pregnancy, during labor or breast-feeding. In most cases, HIV is believed to be transmitted during the last weeks of pregnancy or during delivery. There's a bigger possibility that the child contracts HIV from the mother if she has advanced HIV or AIDS, if she has low CD4 count, if the water breaks at least four hours before delivery, if the labor is difficult or she has a genital infection.
