Sex While On My Period & while On the Pill ? Posted: 06-14-07 11:57am
i dont know what to do anymore, i always
get paranoid with these things and i hate
not having someone to ask. i tryed calling
the doctor's office but they said they
didnt have any "advice" nurses and that i
would need to make an appointment. then i
called planned parenthood which basically
blew me off telling me i had to call my
own doctor for that. hopefully someone
here has been through this and could
possibly help me.
i have been on birth control pills for a
year and have always use them correctly
along with the use of a condom (ive used 2
methods at the same time).. well this week
was my "off week" (the week where you get
your period) on the pill pack and i had
unprotected sex. the reason im freaking
out is because i dont know if you can get
pregnant when you have sex during your
period even though you are on birth
control pills?..
im worryed that my period is going to stop
= get pregnant

I'm sorry you had bad luck with the doc
and planned parenthood. Don't worry - you
are still protected against pregnancy in
the week you take the inactive pills. You
should expect your period soon.

yeah, whenever I call my doctors office
they always give me a reallly hard time.
They still give me advice, but they are
quite rude about it.
I mean like.. they are the one that
prescribed the pill to you,
shouldn't they help you out with it just a
little?

I'm sorry they did that to you... I called
planned parenthood for pill advice once
too, and the nurse I got was pretty nice
and help soothe my fears rather well.

Sorry they didn't give you the help you
needed.
Yes, you are okay. If you are taking the
pill correctly then you can have sex
without a condom, without pulling out
every day of the month and you will be 99%
protected against pregnancy.
It does seem counter-intuitive that you
would be protected during the pill-free or
placebo pill week, but the pills do
prevent pregnancy for all 28 days of your
cycle, as long as you start the next pack
on time too.
There are of course a few things that can
reduce birth control's effectiveness, like
if you are taking antibiotics or if you
vomit before the pill has been absorbed
into your system.
like everyone else said, you are fine,
youve been taking the pill regularly for a
while now so it is totally fine, i find
also u can call the pharmacy at the
drugstore near you they can also tell you
as well, and theyre more ap to answer
questions regaurding medicines. i called
the pharmacy when i had questions about my
birth control. so id try that next time.

It seems odd to me that no one has
mentioned that you really shouldn't worry,
not just because the pill should protect
you throughout your cycle, but also
because you are very very very very very
unlikely to get pregnant while on your
period, even if you aren't on birth
control. Your period starts after you've
ovulated and the egg hasn't been
fertilized, your body releases the blood
that was stored up in the lining of the
uterus in preparation of a fertilized egg
attaching... so in any normal cycle, you
do not have an egg available to be
fertilized while on your period, nor is
your uterus set for it to attach and grow.
So unless something realllly strange
happened, you wouldn't be able to get
pregnant.
And if you're on your period, it won't
just stop and you'll be pregnant. When
you're on your period is probably the
least likely point in your cycle for you
to be able to get pregnant. You can't get
pregnant every day of the month, with or
without birth control.
I'd suggest going to the planned
parenthood website and under birth control
methods they actually list the not
recommended methods like pulling out or
charting your cycle. While it's not
recommended to just chart your cycle,
there is a lot of information there about
how your cycle works, when you are and are
not able to get pregnant, etc. I'd suggest
that every woman have a clear
understanding of how this works. It's your
body, your cycle, get to know it.
So yeah, the pill when used correctly is
99% effective, and the chances of getting
pregnant while on your period are
incredibly slim with or without birth
control. So, you're fine.
