getting sick with hiatus hernia
this is a reply to dinkidi.

I too have a hiatus hernia and was getting sick all the time, after nearly everything i ate. this continued for 3 months until i had xrays, barium tests repeated and it showed that i was so constipated (as a result from protium) that i couldnt digest any food. i got 2 colonic hydrotherapy sessions done and i started on alot of stuff from the herbal shop and it really helped me. hope this helps

hiatus hernia
I too have a hiatus hernia.I am fed up with my doctors as they don't seem to be that interested in my symptoms.I have said for many years that my stomach is some how connected to my heart problems.Ridiculous I know but I have just read a letter from a woman who has identical problems I do.Heart arrythmias.Sometimes missing beats, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. All tests have been fine.I get pain from my stomach which goes up my neck and into my throat, especially when walking, and mainly when I havn't eaten. Not angina as test have proven.I get a severe ache to the right of my breastbone, and usual reflux. All that I have been offered is gaviscon, which sometimes helps. My Dr even seems reluctant to give me repeat prescriptions for this.I get reluctant to go to my Dr.

hiatus hernia
Today I just got the results of my barium meal after years of practically living on gaveston. Two years ago i had what was suspected to be a broken rib from a fairground ride the pain was unbearable at the time. I havent had any pain in my rib except when i bend down it felt as if it was 'locking' then 2 weeks ago a lump has come up under my right rib and its been really painful. Is this going to be the case all the time seeing as im on gastric tabs plus motilium plus gaviscon as the hernia has caused what is called aggressive acid reflux. I have been told surgery is out of the question unless the hernia is life threatening so i guess is this a lifetime of pain or does it flair up now and again and wil i have to spend the rest of my life avoiding lifting etc

Hiatus Hernia and back pain, are they linked?
My doctor suspects that I have a Hiatus Hernia. Blood was checked for everything "checkable" and all came back neg.
I am now waiting for a scan to be done on the upper abdomen, if that is negative then I am having an endoscopy.

I have been in pain for 9 days and am really getting weary. I just cannot handle the pain which is in my lumbar area of my back and mainly across the epigastric region and inder the left ribs.

I do not get acid reflux but apparently that is not a must. If only I could get some relief from the ache.
Aparently back poblems can also be referred to the upper abdominal area so that would be the last thing to be checked. In the meantime I guess I just have to grin and bear it as everything I have taken only gives very short relief. Loved your posts, they are so helpful.

Haetus Hernia back and chest pains
Hi everyone, I had a major heart attack 3 years ago (I was using extreme force at the time digging a trench for the runner beans) at first I thought I had pulled a muscle near my right shoulder blade. I had 2 stents put in to my heart arteries the following day. Since then I have suffered pains in chest and back especially after dinner, also anxiety attacks, missed heart beats and definitely too much pain. I was diagnose with a sliding haetus hernia using a barium meal. Some times I eat the dinner in two halves. I have been on lansaprazole 40 mg for a long time. NOW because of the pain levels I am on Buprenorphine 10 microgram per hour patches which last a week, and reduce the level of pain. If pain too great then I also take tramadol, and have movelat gel pain killer massaged around the middle of my back. What next?

Hiatus Hernia
Hi Everyone again.
My latest medication change has reduced my back pain.
I now have 40mg Omeprazole every 12 hours.
And 20 minutes before eating I take 10mg Domperidone.
The back pain is much reduced, even painless times after eating.
Of course I made a mistake earlier, I eat two small chocolate biscuits at 11pm without the tablet.
I am still suffering uncomfortable level of back pain 2 hours later - I will think twice before eating in future.

Hiatus hernia
Hi Everyone
When i was a baby I had a Pyloric stenosis oporation. I have had problems around that area on and off through my life (40 now)... I was told I had a hiatus hernia a couple of years ago after an endoscopy... think I have had it since the operation. (been on pp pills for last 5 years which help with the acid but not the pain) (avoid , coffee, choc, tomatoes, fried food, and hight sugar and alchohol - I have a real prob with the last one !!) It has got worse over the last few weeks... tight feeling under the sternum , waking up in the night like going to have heart attack , wind (both ends !!) middle back pain etc... Before for I go under the knife I will try the Chriropractor route... apparently it can help... anyone else tried it ???

hiatal hernia?
Same Symptoms.

I am experiencing the same symptoms and have not yet been diagnosed. The only difference seems to be that I am ok while I am sleeping and when I awake I feel ok. It is within an hour or so that my symptoms kick in and stay with me all day until bed. Anyone else have this?

Recent diagnosis of HH, Chiropractic for GERD
Just found this site. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia a couple of weeks ago after a month of the same sort of pain most of you are describing: burning chest pain, pain under the right ribs, occasional nausea, sleeplessness, panic, and fatigue from all of this. I was worked up for heart attack, which was negative. I am on Prevacid, only 15 mg thusfar every 24 hours, but this is not working very well. Still figuring out about eating...no appetite, that's for sure. My symptoms came on after it seemed that some vitamins got stuck in my esophagus. When I had the endoscopy, I was told that I was negative for ulcer, H pylori, and celiac sprue. No signs of Barrett's, or cancer...all good. The hernia is "small" but I will have to ask how big that means.

In response to the question about chiropractic. It may be worth a try. I had severe GERD for probably 35 years and chiropractic eliminated it five years ago. I will have to see if she can help with this hernia thing. I do know that one of the reasons for all the pain and symptoms is vagus nerve irritation. Sometimes chiropractic can help with that. I'll get back to this forum and let you know how it works for me. The kind of chiropractic I do is called Atlas Orthoganal...it is very gentle.

I am one of those people who can't do pain meds. Allergic to most. The pain has come and gone...no clear reason that I can see for what makes it start or stop...still learning, I guess. I can stand to lose some weight, so I will work on that.

Glad for this forum.

So glad I found this site. Started suffering in Dec 08, stomach problems, feeling sick, constant burping. Dr put me on Omeprazole and referred me for tests. Had an endoscopy Feb 09 which showed a 5cm sliding hitaus hernia. Few days later had an ultrasound which showed a large gallstone. Dr said I should have gallbladder removed which I had done beginning of Aug 09. Was told that after this I would get back to normal and eat normal. WRONG. I thought the pain in ribs, chest and top of back was owing to the gallbladder but looks like its the hernia. I've been going to the Dr's every week since October but getting nowhere.

I then decided to pay to see a private Dr on 1st Dec 09 as I have been so worried with all this constant pain, thinking that its something serious. He said he wanted me to have another endoscopy and wanted my Dr to put me back on Omeprazole. When I questioned him about the pain in top of my back and under and back of right ribs he said that people who have their gallbladder removed can still have the same pain?????

So at moment I'm on 20mg Omeprazole and also taking Domperidone 3 times a day. I've been in constant pain now since last Sep/Oct in rib and upper back area, feeling sick, continuous burping (embarrassing), pain in chest area, top of stomach hurts most times but especially after eating anything at all. 3 days ago I've developed a really sore throat and can feel like nodules in my neck. Oh and a sore tongue with white spots on it (don't know if these are connected with hernia).

I smoke and I know that I shouldn't. Have cut right down. Was on NRT but Dr told me it makes the stomach worse and not to use them. I'm still waiting for my 2nd endoscopy, haven't heard anything as yet. Oh and will be having a chest x-ray as been totally convinced that all this is cancer. Dr probably thinks that I'm a raving lunatic but it leaves us to think the worst when we don't get any direct answers to our pain.

I saw my gastroenterologist again this week. He said that my last scope was mostly normal, save what he called a "small" hiatal hernia...his thinking on the pain was "constipation and gas." His answer, MiraLax. If I am still having pain in two weeks, then a colonoscopy and CT scan to look at my lower GI.

Here is the interesting thing: reading michhellemc's post from last May 28th, she spoke of constipation from the medicine she was on (not the same one as me). This made me look at the side effects for the proton pump inhibitor that I have been on for 6 weeks, Prevacid. Lo and behold, a 1% chance of constipation (I am the person who usually gets side effects).

I stopped the Prevacid, and have taken the laxative for three nights and am no longer constipated. Haven't had any more chest/rib pain either (knock on wood). I also want to say that, until I saw the GI doc, I wouldn't say I had been constipated once since before my colectomy three years ago. I went straight on the Prevacid after what I think was a mild burn from a stuck vitamin pill in November. The gastro doc said my "high fiber diet" was causing gas, and the gas, plus constipation were the pain I was having.

So, I will report back. The endoscopy showed no ulcer or burn in my esophagus or stomach. So if there had been one two months ago, it had healed. If what I had was constipation and flatulence from the Prevacid, then hopefully I will continue to feel better.

With the GI problems I had with diverticulitis, and with the problems I have had with statin drugs, I guess the caveat is to always be aware of the list of side effects.

I will come back to this site and let you know what happens.

I am having many of the same symptoms as you all say. Severe heartburn, sore at top of stomach, chest pain especially behind the breast bone, back pain which moves around from the middle to near the top and into my right shoulder blade. Went to hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack but they said my heart was ok and put it down to gastritis. I think it may be a hiatus though as I had a bad cough just before I started with this which apparently can start it off. I also have feelings of dizziness when the gas/acid suddenly comes up. Anyone else have that. Pretty scary at times. I guess I'll have to have a camera down for a look. I'm on omeprazole 20mg twice a day. If I lie in bed and relax I seem to be ok but once I start to do something the pain and acid comes back. Reading some of the posts on here has helped me a lot. I don't feel on my own through all this now.

ive been living with the haitis hernia for 4 years now and im 28 years old. i get precribed 40mg OMEPRAZOLE twice a day. these pills work the best but only buy the losec type not the dr reddys ones as doc reddys don't work that well. any heart burn tablets dont work as its not heart burn im getting as what i have is a 4.8cm sliding haiatis hernia that stops my stomach from closing the valve to my esophagus.when i vomit its very violent everything comes out with speed and force. i cant go to restaurants and have a meal with my family as i dont know if i will vomit cause when i do it aint little or easy to catch in my hands .if you read up on these hernias it explanes what it is . These hernia's are common with people over 50s and its all about life style and what we eat. but as in my case its Hereditary my dad and granddad also have it. i gave up smoking and it made my health worse so im smoking again but very little i have 3 smokes a day stress also has a big effect on the hernia. my partner has had to go to cpr classes as many times ive stopped breathing in my sleep due to acid build up in the back of my throat and my partner has had to revive me. very scary for her. ive had over 20 endoscopy's and still no surgery. ive been admitted to hospital 13 times due to pain in my abdomen i wish i can end this all its getting to much im lucky im strong willed and got so many people that care for me i cant take this much longer im 28 years old ive got alot of life to live but i cant live anther 30years like this its honestly like living in hell. i cant work i cant lift things i cant play with my children i cant do all the things i use to love doin. its getting to much
