Q: Clotting Issues

I had two miscarriages, with the second determined to be caused by chromosomal problems. I was tested fairly soon after the mc and tested positive for one of the clotting disorders. Since I did not fit the clinical picture I was retested two times months later and then came up negative. The explanation I was given was that if you test for clotting disorders too close to a pregnancy that you can get a false postive. I am currently pregnant and taking a baby aspirin as a precaution even though my OB says I do not have a clotting issue. Is it safe to trust that two lab tests are correct? Also is it ever possible to have a clotting disorder only in pregnancy.

thanks.

I personally don't feel comfortable giving you medical advice pertaining to this. I haven't done research on this particular topic. I would suggest seeking out a second opinion-it doesn't hurt to double check.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

Progesterone, a hormone produced by your body after ovulation and throughout the first trimester to support a pregnancy, can raise your blood platelet levels. Having elevated blood platelets can cause clotting, and will cause you to test positive for a clotting problem. So, it is quite possible that all of the tests were correct. Baby asprin is commonly referred to help with this issues, even during pregnancy. If your doctor feels that this is in your best interest, I would definitely trust him.

Good luck with your pregnancy. I hope you have a happy and healthy nine months.
