Q: Tension Headaches ?

Hi Everyone!

Brand new to the site.

I’m a 17 year old male who has had a constant headache for 3 weeks. The pain changes a bit, sometimes I get this throbbing pain in my temples, sometimes its like this weird tight pulling sensation like near the front/ top of my head or a pressure feeling. I also have a really saw neck and my lower back hurts. I’ve been to the doctor he said I had tension headaches and referred me to a masseur and chiropractor. The chiro took some x-rays and said my neck was out and my low back was out and with a few treatments it’d be better but it hasn’t worked despite him saying that everything feels fine now. The masseur said my neck was very tight but again this hasn’t helped. I’ve been taking pain killers, doing neck exercises and keeping heat on my neck like everyone’s said but it hasn’t helped. The pains not that bad its just there all the time and gets annoying. We have exams on this week and the doctor said that it could cause headaches but I really don’t feel that stressed or worried about it. I have no other symptoms or anything like that except when it first started like 3 weeks ago I felt a bit weak and my hands were shaky but that’s gone now.

I’m getting rather concerned that something might be really wrong? I just want them to go away! Sad

I'm sorry you've had such a hard time getting rid of this headache.

What you are describing does sound like a tension headache. So, you should try not to worry. They are not serious. (though they can be painful).

You said that you are on painkillers. What painkillers are you on? They have prescriptions for tension headaches. I think you might want to call you doctor and ask if it would be an option for you. (the brand I take is phrenilin forte)

You should definitely continue the stretches. They might not feel as though they are giving you immediate relief, but they will really help in the long run.

You may also want to ask your doctor about a tens unit. They can be very helpful as well.

The only other things to make sure you are doing is pretty basic. Make sure you are eating properly. Take a multivitamin (this will help from getting muscle cramps) especially potassium. Make sure you are drinking enough water. Dehydration can cause muscle cramps as well. Lastly, make sure you are getting enough sleep.
