Q: Nuvaring Period Skipping Attempt Gone Wrong !

I tried to skip my period on NuvaRing and failed miserably. I did the four weeks with the same ring version. I got my period on the day I would have taken the ring out as scheduled, had it all through that week, and it just keeps going. I'm on day 18 of my period now. I started my new ring as usual and it didn't change anything. What do I do now? Just ride it out?

Yeah, pretty much all you can do now is to wait for it to stop.

Many women have a horrible time trying to skip their periods on horomonal birth control that isn't meant for skipping.

Ok, so I stick to my normal ring schedule? People were saying that the only way to get it to stop would be to remove the ring, give it a week, and then put a new one in and start over. But there's no way I want to waste 40 bucks doing that, nor do I want to have to wait to have sex because I'd have to wait for the BC to be effective again.

You can skip on Nuva ring, the problem is that it takes 2-3 months on any form of BC in order to have a successful skip.(for many women it takes time)

KEEP the nuva ring in, basically you just need to ride it out.

Yeah, also you need to replace the ring after four weeks at the latest, cause then the medicine runs out. I would just put the new one in and wait it out.

Oh yeah, I've been sticking to my schedule. If I'm bleeding as a result of skipping I'm not at risk of becoming pregnant, right? That would only be if I was bleeding with no skipping and it was signaling that my BC was not suppressing ovulation. Since the bleeding is simply because my body didn't tolerate the skipping I'm fine if I had sex during the bleeding so long as I replaced my ring on time, right?

You are safe as long as you have had a steady supply of horomones in your body. By skipping your period, you have more than assured this. You should be safe.

Ok great. A pharmacy student told me I may not be fully protected, but when I explained to her WHY I was having breakthrough she didn't seem to understand. I just wanted to make sure I didn't do something really stupid by having sex the other night. lol. Thanks!

As long as you replace the ring no later than four weeks, you are fine. I promise. Read the label, it will say the same thing.

She is only a student, right? I have a friend who is a pharmacy student as well. She doesn't know everything yet. Maybe she thinks you are keeping it in to long, but they are good for up to four weeks. After that there are not enough hormones, but there are until then. Even if you are bleeding. That doesn't mean you aren't protected.

Yeah, if I recall correctly the Nuvaring booklet has instructional information on how to do "continuous use", which is leaving it in for 4 weeks and removing old ring and inserting new ring on the same day.

Sounds like you're fine, but it really sucks that skipping didn't work for you. It didn't work for me either. Sad
