Q: Should I Reconstruct My Anterior cruciate ligament ?

I have a complete tear of the ACL in my right knee. My doctor is hesitant to reconstruct it because I am 46 and have arthritis in my knee. He says the reconstruction may make it worse. I play soccer and ski in the winter and can't imagine having to give those up at 46. What are the chances/percentages that after reconstruction, my knee pain or flexibility will be worse?

I was 16 when I had my first ACL. All I can tell you is that I wish I hadn't...invasive surgery is so detrimental to the cartilage and has given me arthritis for more than 15 years now...I'm wondering about the knee replacement option already...and I'm only 31. I also tried to ski with the ACL repair and it's just not worth it. I even re-injured my knee on the slopes!

So, just know that you have a choice. Many people do participate in these sports and train the muscles around the knee beforehand. I'd opt for that any day.
