Hi, I've taken a break from Ortho since April. I still have about 3 packs left. My last period was about 2 weeks go. Recently, I've had unprotected sex. I really dont know much information about the emergency contraceptives. If I start the pill today.. would that necessarily prevent pregnancy? Would it be safe? Thanks.

you know what..im in your same situation, kinda. my period was 2 weeks ago too. i have been off my bc pills for a month now..and i had unproteted sex with my boyfriend about 3 days ago. my boyfriend and i were referred by a doctor that walgreens or any pharmacy can sell over the counter emergency contraceptive if you are 18 years old or up, if you are younger than 18, you need a prescription. but im scared too because i have been using the pull out method with my boyfriend during the last month that i have not been on birth control. and for the past few days i have been peeing non stop, bloated, and today i feel nauseas. i dont know if thats just the side effect of the emergency contraceptive, or if i am pregnant. i get my period in about 2.5 weeks. so i dont know! but if you want to try the emergency contraceptive, walgreens pharmacy charged me 42 dollars on Plan B..you might have seen it on tv before.

hope that helps a little Smile

Contraceptive pills such as othro are not the same thing as plan-b or other "morning-after" pills.

Starting ortho after unprotected sex will not prevent pregnancy. Ortho must be taken as a regiment before unprotected sex.

If it is less than 72 hours since you had unprotected sex, then you can still go to a store and get plan-b or another "morning-after" type of pill.

Starting ortho right now isn't going to hurt you in any way. It won't hurt any part of your reproductive system, even if there is already a fertilized egg on its way to the uterus.

The reason ortho won't work like plan-b is because plan-b has higher doses and different horomones in it, and so it stops ovulation almost immediately, unlike ortho, which eases your body into the new cycle.

Like I said, no, starting ortho right now is useless except to begin protection for future encounters. You need an emergency contraceptive.
