Triglyceride and cholesterol medications contraindications Posted: 06-09-07 18:30pm
One year ago I started taking 500 mg/day
of niacin. After three months there was no
effect on raising HDL, so the doc also
prescribed Tricor. After three more months
there was a lowering of the
Tri-glicerides, but the HDL did not go up
as hoped. Tricor was stopped and the
niacin raised to 1000 mg/day for the last
six months. After one year the niacin is
not having an effect on HDL. The latest
thought by my doc was to try Triglide in
conjunction with the niacin. However,
after doing some research online, it looks
like Triglide contains the same active med
as in Tricor, so I wonder if it is worth
starting a six month regimen of Triglide,
or are the two so similar that there is
likely to be no effect with the
Triglide?

Tricor and triglide are brand names of the
medications from the fenofibrate group of
drugs. These medications are used to lower
triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the
blood. Triglide is tricor's old formation.
The new formation can be taken with or
without regard to meals. Another
difference is the dosage. It's up to the
health care provider as to which of these
medications will be chosen, because they
contain the same active substance.
