Q: Pregnancy & Tattoos During? Anyone With Personal Experie

Hello everyone! Let me first make it clear that I am not posting this in an attempt to open a discussion regarding the pros & cons of tattoo body art. I do not wish to engage in argument with narrow minded individuals whom do not have nor wish to ever have a tattoo of their own. A tattoo is a very personal decision, and one that only the person whose body is being tattooed can make for themselves.

So here is my medical pregnancy question: Is it safe to get a tattoo during pregnancy?

I am in the process of having a large tattoo done on my back & side of my body. I have had 6 sessions completed. It is of a plant with flowers. The outline, shading, and some color is completed I have 3 more sessions scheduled for this June & July to complete the artwork. The artist is a very well known woman for this type of tattoo art. The studio is very clean, uses brand new needles each tattoo, and follows medical sanitary guidelines for all their tattoos. The studio itself is an elite tattoo studio, with each session costing $480-$640. Financially my partner & I are very secure, and have college funds paid for our 2 children.

This morning I took a pregnancy test, and it was positive. I am probably about 3 weeks pregnant. I had a prescheduled tatttoo appointment, and so I went as scheduled. I felt fine during the tattoo, but I was more sensitive to the pain than usual. After each tattoo session I feel very relaxed and calm. During the tattoo I am generally calm & relaxed as well. So my question is: Is it medically safe to continue the next 3 appointments during my first trimester? Thank you for serious responses to my serious question.

No. A tattoo artist will ask if you are pregnant and, if you are honest, they will not tattoo you if you are pregnant.

That said, I don't think anyone would have spoken negatively about your choice to get a tattoo. It's the 'in' thing to do. Everyone has them. Just like everyone has a nose ring, facial peircings, etc.

Thank you for your response. I will inform my tattoo artist, and see if she recommends to wait untill after birth to continue. Do you have knowledge of "specific medical" examples that make it unsafe? I have been looking this topic up; and the possible risks are "stress" during tattoo, ink poisoning, or infections/disease from an unsanitary studio. I personally feel that I am very relaxed during the tattoo so stress is not a factor, & my artist has told me that I have a very slight risk of ink poisoning since I have been tattooed 6x prior with the same formula of inks. Again, I wouldn't be going to a tattoo shop that was not sanitary, and I am confident in this artist and shop. I wanted to have this tattoo completed, and not an unfinished piece of work on my body. The pregnancy is not a surprise, and I have been on high levels of folic acid to prepare. If the artist and others feel that it is necessary, I will definately wait to complete the tattoo until I give birth. I made a note for serious responses, since I have read other posts on this site, in which respondents have not been professional and reasonable in their responses regarding tattoos.

the stress is puts on your body can make you go into to preterm labor and that is why they really recommend you wait. if you tattoo artist will tattoo you while you are pregnant then he or she is unprofessional and unmoral because any tattoo shop with common sense would refuse due to legal matters.. its just asking for a lawsuit. the reason a lot of people do give is risk of infection like hep. b and c but the truth of the matter is a clean shop does not have those risks. personally i have a few tattoos and want to get more but will not until i give birth because not only is your body in a different form when pregnant ( i.e your skin stretches, your muscles move) but think of how you usually tense and the vibration from the tattooing gum.. personally, im not that selfish as to even put my child at risk.

and regardless of how "relaxed" you feel your body still responds to being tattooed.. if you realize it or not.

Thank you Vanessalouanne! I'm glad to hear some words of advice from someone who has been tattooed. I don't want to take any unneccessary risks for our baby, and I don't want to be selfish for the sake of finishing the tattoo. It has been a work in progress for the last 10 months, with an artist that books appts 4 months in advance. I've had 2 children previously, and my body will probably be in similar shape with the birth of a 3rd. (I never did become Jane Fonda...), so it won't hurt me to wait till after the baby is finished breastfeeding. My tattoo artist has 2 young children, so if she knew I was pregnant she would most likely not tattoo me. Thanks for your common sense suggestion, it is well received!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I think that the risk of ink poisoning is increased when pregnant as well. Your veins will swell and become more pronounced when you become pregnant (especially on and around your stomach) due to the increased blood production and circulation. Which can increase your risk. It is also a concern for you to get an infection, which could do harm when pregnant.

Honestly, there are no studies on tattoo's during pregnancy, and alot of the facts that we hear are more or less common sense. It is more a better safe than sorry stand that many professionals will take. Have you heard back from the studio in regards to there pregnancy policy?

not only is what the ladies saying ring true, but the pain you will experience while pregnant is immense!!

Your nerve endings throughout your body raise closer to the skin and become way more sensitive during pregnancy!

I waited until I had my daughter to get her name on the entire top of my foot.

I think about 90% of us here have at least 1 tat! So this isn't an odd question! Wink

I've had 6 tattoos done during this pregnancy so far, and nothing is wrong
if anything it helps me relax more from the stresses of life
and they have healed twice as fast as they did before I was pregnant
