Hey girls,

I was just wondering how you go about getting on medicaid for pregnancy. I had insurance with my job that I left but it will be running out soon. I checked on COBRA and for just me it was over $300 and I just can't afford that. We are looking at my husband's benefits but I don't know that they will cover pregnancy right away. It's like they would since it's a group plan but you never know. I just can't afford it on my own.

Any advice on what to do?

i got on medicaid, because i'm not married & currently unemployed, when the clinic i went to provided me with the paperwork.

every state has their own medicaid, so what i would do if i were you, is call the number - which i'm sure you could get through your doctor or if you look for it online - call them up & ask them to send you an application.

on the application, you'll have to fill out what you bring in & what your husband brings in. they'll base whether or not you qualify on that. if you do qualify & get accepted, then they'll base what you get from the government on your combined income.

hope everything goes well for you, hun.

PS. it took me about a month to finish up the medicaid process. it was a lot of paperwork, so don't despair & have patience.

i have never had medicaid so i don't know really how it works but, my husband got me on maternity card...don't know if you have ever heard of it but it is only like $60 a month. they are not an insurance but they have really good reviews. they take your doc bills and get the best deal out of it and they are able to cut the whole thing in half or less. they have info on the internet. but if you can get the medicaid i'm sure that is a better route to take. good luck to ya.

Getting medicaid is pretty easy I think. I just went in with paystubs and they gave me a temp card so that I could start going to appointments right away.

I don't know what state you live in but in .IL they have to give public aid to all women no matter their income. Sometimes you have to pay a premium but it is only like 15-20 dollars. But again, that is .Il and we have some good public aid.

Anyone from alabama? I think every state in the U.S. has to do that for pregnant women.

correct. every state should offer medicaid to pregnant woman.

i'm moving to west virginia next month. in order to qualify for their medicaid, i have to cancel new jersey medicaid. ugh, then i have to go through the whole paperwork process, again.

also, depending on what they feel you qualify for, your medicaid may carry over for yourself two months after your child is born.

I finally got in touch with someone and she told me that I probably would qualify even though our income is over the limit since I'm pregnant. I told her what was going on and she was so helpful. She is sending me everything I need and told me what to do and said she would give me a special address so that it could be done within a few days time.

im not sure how alabama works but i applied for medicaid for my pregnancy with joseph , they cover pregnancy only, so say you get a UTI when your pregnant that would not be covered, premature labor yeah anything with the pregnancy and the babys health would be covered but any illness you get while pregnant your on your own, so id ask them what exactly they cover. i was unemployed when i applied so they made me file unemployment as well in order to qualify but me and jason werent married either i was living at his house so they just put it as me on my own paying his mom rent. dumb thing is that it ran out the may of 05 and i was due august 05 so i would have had to reapply. i ended up going back to my parents and was still under theres though, i thnk its dumb that they stop it halfway through your pregnancy its like um your pregnant for 9 mths not like 5. so id double check all that too to make sure its all squared away.

My medicaid covers everything. I just went in for a yeast infection and they covered the appt and the meds. I guess since it is was caused by the pregnancy it was covered. If I go in for a non-obstetrician visit then I only have to pay a $2 co-pay. Some of the people I know even go to chiropractors that accept it with again, a $2 co-pay.

My medicaid expires 6 weeks after I have the baby. So, that way I can get my 6 week check up in. Then, even if I am not on medicaid, the state will cover my birth control. Sorta nice. The baby will always be covered so I don't have to worry about that.
