Hi I am new here. But I was wondering if somebody could please tell me how they prepared for there hysterectomy before and after. I was told to have someone stay with me the first week. But I live a lone with my 9 year old and everybody I know has to work. My 9 year old is adhd. He is a handful. He doesn't let me rest when I am sick now. I could have my ex stay here with me. But I am so afraid my son is going to be rough with me. I have precancerous cells due to hpv. This is the second time they have showed up. DR said I think we should do a full hysterectomy. He will know tomorrow how bad it is. I need to know what to expect from this. Could someone please tell me that has gone through this. Thanks. Have a great night.

you need to rest after the op - you must allow yourself to heal properly.
the degree will depend if you have an abdominal incision or if your hyst is done vaginally.

if you have an abdominal incision then yes you ought have someone responsible near by.

for your healing sake would it be possible for your son to go stay with your ex, so that you at least get some peace and quiet at home, at least for the first few days/week.

I can't say how I prepared for surgury because mine was an emergency, so I had no prep time at all.

As you are meeting with your doctor, write down a list of questions and take it with you.
leave spaces so you can jot down answers.
if s/he gives an answer you don't understand, do not be afraid to ask for an explanation.
The very best thing you can do is go into this knowing the answers to your questions.

If your reason is pre-cancerous cells due to hpv then I expect your cervix will be removed, this will then leave you with a vaginal cuff at the top of your vagina.
monthly spotting after removal of the cervix is unlikely and if it does occur it can commonly be treated with silver nitrate (literally a 30 second job in most cases)

ask about your ovaries.
keep them if you can.
the ovaries continue to produce female hormones and this can help protect against conditions such as osteoporisis later in life.

After Hysterectomy
it has been 2 weeks since i had the abdonimal hysterectomy. i had the op on the Saturday morning and was home Tuesday morning. I was tired and sore. I felt well though. I have had my hubby do everything from the kids pack lunches to making tes to hanging out the washing. I could not have done without him. Those co-codamol tabs for pain relief made me feel dizzy but worked and am taking nothing now. you may feel fine after but help should be there for you. you will not be insured with your car insurance people for a while after this type of operation and you are advised as i was not to drive for a while. i now have reddish/brown staining 2 weeks after op and hope i do not have to go back in as i was going wee things about the house, nothing major, just making sandwiches emptying washing machine....and i think that may have been too much for my body.......just b careful/
