Q: Help Read Mri With Back Injury

I have been working as a housekeeper for some time untill I felt a horrible pain in my back. I used meds to keep the pain down and continued working which landed me in my bed for the last month. I have a MRI read and would like to know what it means the severity level of the injury to my back.

Here is what the Report says:

HISTORY: Technique: Four pulse sequences: T1 sagittal, T2 sagittal, proton density and T2 transaxial images from L2-3 Through L5-S1.
Comparison: None.

Findings: The lumbar vertebral bodies have normal heights marrow signal intensity and alligment.
Assuming five lumbar levels, the conus medullaris terminates at the L1 level with normal contour and signal intensity. There is normal dependent layering of the cauda equina.

L1-2 through L3-4 disc levels are unremarkable.

At L4-5 there is normal discal narrowing, mild discal desiccation and minimal disc bulge. Bilateral facets are unremarkable.

At L5-S1, There is normal discal height, moderate discal desiccation and a 3mm left-sided disc extrusion displacing the left proximal S1 nerve root. Bilateral facets are mildly hypertrophied without encroachment at the exiting L5 spinal nerve.

IMPRESSION: Left-sided L5-S1 disc extrusion displacing the left proximal S1 nerve root.

People with this severity of back injury, do they recover at 100%?
I am in pain 24/7 and my doctor sent a referal to my workmans comp as a routine referal instead of a urgent?! is this right? I don't think I can bare this pain any more/

hi gogo4 your study says you have problems at the two bottom joints of your spine with the bottom one L5-S1 being the worst.

At L4-L5 there is some disc narrowing but it sounds as if it is within the normal range you have some desiccation at this level which is a lack of moisture within the disc also the disc is bulging but the small pair of joints (facet joints) towards the rear of the vertebra are normal.

At L5-S1 as well as the discal desiccation you have extrusion of the disc material this is when disc ruptures and material from within the disc is pushed out of the disc and in your case it has pushes aside the nerve root that branches off the spinal cord. the facet joints at this level show a kind of bony overgrowth that indicates arthritis.

These are hard questions to answer if you were a professional tennis player i would say no but if you are fairly inactive then you might not know the difference but then not everyone makes a good recovery. Its probably not right that you are not being treated as urgent but then nearly everyone has to wait to see a specialist it depends how long you have to wait to get treated, anyway i am unfamiliar with the system that you are in.

Good luck gogo4

Hi Nickdenny

"Abnormal Studys Prognostically significant in a 20 year old with one definite finding at L4 and L5"

All this means is that you have some kind of abnormal finding at the two bottom joints in your spine it does not say what kind of abnomal findings are present.
